  1. You will save a load of money by doing lots of locking. I brought a boat from Bugsworth to Huddersfield solo (100+ miles and 100+ locks ) and lost half a stone!
  2. Tried this, still can't log on.Genius daughter thinks that my mobile phone server is incompatable with the Norman forum one.
  3. Agree,I used to clean my motorbike engine with it and the pong from a hot engine was wonderful. Gunk doesn't smell like that anymore, something has changed.
  4. Thanks for the replies guys. Going to try a different tack. New username.new password and my daughter's e mail address. Hope it's not going to repeat "that username is in use, that password is in use and that email is in use".
  5. I am (was) a member of the above forum.I used to log on with my laptop, with it rembering my password. The laptop has now handed it's dinner pail in so I am using my mobile phone. Now,the forum doesn't recognise my user name or password.I have followed the forgotten password instructions, but have got no response.I have also e mailed the webmaster and again got no response. Does anyone know if the Norman owners Forum is still in existence? Maybe they are ignoring me because I bought a steel narrowboat.?
  6. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  7. Freeman built a version of the 22 as a narrow beam, but they are now as rare as rocking horse droppings. All other models were wide beam I think.
  8. Just received a quote of £275 not including slipping charges. From A Lang, doesn't sound unreasonable.
  9. Not sure about a Hi Ab.Can they reverse down a slipway and lift the boat from the back of the truck? It wouldn't be possible to unload from the side at my mooring.
  10. Once I had occasion to have a polite word with someone behaving badly.I was quite surprised when he mumbled something like an apology. I did have my windlass dangling from my belt and a mooring pin in my hand (wouldn't dream of using them as a weapon) but perhaps the sight of these helped to keep the conversation reasonable.
  11. That is an option. Also Pillings lock marina is quite close.
  12. Thanks Alan, just sent an e mail requesting a quote.
  13. Just bought a little boat, a Norman 20ft. Due to domestic circumstances I am unable to sail it home for three weeks. The vendor wants it off the mooring ASAP. Has anyone any suggestions as to who I could contact to get it transported? There is no trailer with the boat, and the nearest place to slip it out is Pillings Lock marina. Thanks, in advance.
  14. Can you still get a "Flit" spray. It was a can with a sort of bike pump attached. You filled the can with dilute Jeyes fluid or any stuff that flies hate and pumped. My mum had one in er,1958.
  15. How do you prevent the foam sticking to the piece of ply used to spray the underside of a horizontal surface?
  16. Yamaha outboards are good reliable motors. Had the 6hp one on a Norman 20,and it was more than enough on canals. Was only pull start, and wouldn't charge the battery. Some of the smaller outboards as optional exras have electric start and an alternator for battery charging.
  17. As the owner of an older (41 year old ) boat I find this thread most interesting. Can't add anything to what's been said , but one boat on the mooring had what the owner thought was microbial corrosion. It took the form of clearly visible bright orange patches below the waterline. When he blacked his boat he said these orange patches could only be removed with a wire brush. I have just noticed some small orange patches around the counter of my boat, but I have just sold it,so it's not really my concern anymore. The boat that was badly contaminated was moored for several years in Ripon, and the owner seems to think that the contamination was picked up there.
  18. Thank you for the reply Alan. I think l would prefer the fixed tank properly ventilated complying with part two. Anyway, there were other reasons why I didn't buy the boat, but part of the fun is driving all over the country looking at boats. (like hell it is!)
  19. Went to look at a boat for sale today.(A grp outboard powered cruiser) Asked to look at the fuel installation and on lifting the rear cockpit seating I got strong whiffs of petrol. The tank was a plastic outboard one placed loosly in the outboard well, not secured at all. My last grp boat had a steel tank in a steel locker with a lid, and with a vent/drain through the transom (just like a gas locker) When I mentioned this to the broker, he got quite shirty and told me I was wrong and the boat passed the BSS inspection with the set up it had. Are the fuel installation rules different for outboard powered craft? Anyone know? If I am wrong, I am happy to be corrected. Nonethelless, I wouldn't be happy frying my chips on a gas hob with that installation. I didn't buy the boat!
  20. I live 15 minutes from my mooring.Very handy for a cruise to the pub. As for fettling,it's also very handy(which all boats need )for DIY maintainance unless you have pots of money to pay a professional. Also useful to have your boat close by for when you get home and find you have left your house keys and wallet on the boat!
  21. I like reading old threads too.Often wonder why some of the posters are no longer posting. They can't all have moved to Thunderboat or passed away can they? To the OP, the best releasing fluid is Plus Gas. You will probably need it to undo nuts on a stove.
  22. It certainly sounds like a blockage some where. On the Calder although I check inlet and water filter daily, there was no weed in either.I cruised for a week on the C+ Hebble without having to clean the filters. However on the Huddersfield broad and narrow, it was necessary daily, especially the narrow.
  23. A couple of things spring to mind. My boat is direct raw water cooled, and I am a regular on th HNC.You have obviously done as members have suggested and if your problem persists, then the cooling water isn't getting to where it's supposed to be. Any blockage I have had has been where there is a 90 degree joint in the pipe. The favourite is the water pipe from the seacock. My engine (BMC 1500) has a hose conection on the cylinder head for flushing sediment out of the water jacket (yours won't have this) but it could be that your heat exchanger needs flushing out. Another possibility is that there is an air leak on the inlet side so degrading the suction of the pump. Perished water filter seal? cross threaded seacock cap? loose pipe conections? Sometimes hard to spot as an air leak does not always allow water out. All cooling systems have their problems. Even skin tank cooling is not trouble free. My direct raw water cooling system has not caused any problems (touch wood) in the time I have had the boat.
  24. Fuel and gas shutoffs are supposed to be clearly marked. If your fuel tank is lower than the fuel pump, then it may not have a shutoff tap.
  25. Assuming you mean a fuel cut off tap, it would be unusual ( and dangerous) if it didn't have one. Trace the tank to carburettot fuel line and it should there some where. They are sometimes it dark corners,so use a torch. If you mean an electric fuel cut off solenoid in the carburettor,if it's a Fomoco carb then probably not. Bizz will know.
