  3. I have no doubt. I did say I couldn't quite remember the details.... just the main point.
  4. There are about a hundred inflatable dinghies utterly blocking the canal on the Hackney / Islington border. Some have rafts, some are dressed as pirates, there are beach balls flying about too. Very good natured. Narrowboats are punting through with their poles. People in the boats all having a party, lots of booze. Took a couple of pics on my phone, but can't find the USB that fits........
  5. This chap was a Paediatrician, and the mob that attacked him / his car (can't quite remember the detail of the story, just the general point) had mistaken the word for Paedophile. The doctor wasn't derenged as far as I know.
  6. Saw this boat last week - dreadful mess!
  7. Holme Lock Sunday morning, gone Sunday afternoon.
  8. Perhaps this is what the chap meant. The surface of the water certainly looks like a lock with water flowing into it from below the surface. Go and look and you'll see what I mean.....
  9. I asked a BW person about this lock once. It's the only lock which has beaten me when single handing. Have you ever noticed the water sort of "boils"? There is a permanent paddle open under the water apparently which why the lock is so hard to empty, and so easy to fill!
  10. So sorry you didn't get her back. RIP Daisy! Mary
  11. One saved my daughter's life in her student flat!
  12. I am thinking of getting a dongle to use with my daughter's Netbook, for occasional use. Sounds like you are all happy using 3 whatever plan you get.
  13. This afternoon the "Noel Road" moorings were not breasted up, one fire producing little smoke, and 3 boat engines. Very quiet ones at that.
  14. I'm only viewing your profile as FidoDido said you had good recent pics of Sawley / Shardlow area. Cheers,

    Mary

  15. Trent on red light at Shardlow floodgate today, also water up to red board at end lock, and lock gates tied together.
  16. Don't get me wrong - I'm not defending criminals myself, just everyone's right to a fair trial. And I agree whole heartedly, there should be no wriggle room!
  17. Would you rather there was no defense for people charged with crimes then, who have to appear in court? Do you have an alternative suggestion?
  18. So here we are on National Sound Check day - 1 2 1 2 1 2 What's your news?
  19. My cousin is a defending solicitor. He says that in a civilised society, where people are innocent until proved guilty, then someone has to be willing to defend the criminals. That doesn't mean he likes them, trusts them, socialises with them etc. I think he's very brave - I don't think I'd like to do his job!
  20. Apart from the use of bellows and reeds to make the sound, like chalk and cheese. A Melodeon is like a button accordion, will give a full and slightly chunky sound, and is often restricted in which musical keys you can play on it. The concertina is usually a much smaller six sided instrument (there are other variations) with a much lighter sound, often fully chromatic. Each button creating one note rather than the melodeon which produces 2, depending on whether the bellows are pushed or pulled. That is a VERY general description. There are loads of different types of both, worth taking the time to look into. Page of concertina pics: My link Page of melodeons: My link
  21. Sorry to hear that. My condolences.
  22. My first 2 or 3 canal holidays were with a group of Morris Dancers in the 80's. People who like folk often like out doorsy, country ish, and not 'run of the mill' activities too. (Not all admittedly). I am a self employed ceilidh caller, and I own a boat. Another ceilidh caller I know is a share boat owner, a ceilidh band member form Coventry is a serial boat owner and I have met numerous other folky people on the cut. 'Fraid it's quite widespread......
