  1. You need to be aware that whilst many marinas do offer visitor mooring for a single night or a few nights a. they charge handsomely for this, often in the range of £20-£30 per night, one I know is £40 per night, so it is an expensive way to buy electricity and b. in the winter these are often taken by people who moor for the whole winter in the marina

    HVO

I got my boat almost to 100% HVO last year and it ran fine in the engine, a newish Beta 43 from 2000, the Webasto and the Refleks stove. I started back on red diesel this year because the >£2.20 per litre made it hard to stomach plus the dubious green credentials.
  3. Thanks, I will clean the joint off, cut the wire back a bit and use some of my lead free solder. Even though the melting point of lead solder would be OK, I believe you should keep well below that temperature during operation.
  4. @nicknorman I have got my brush holder ready to go into my Iskra 175 (Beta 43) converted from a £9.50 ebay regulator. I used high temp insulation wire with sleeving due to concerns with temperature. However, I used standard solder so your warning is timely. The reference to silver solder worries me as a model engineer silver solder means 600degC melting point and gas torch heating (almost low temperature brazing). Having looked around a bit, for electronics, does the term silver soldering refer to the likes of 4% Ag HMP type solder melting at 300degC. I will redo my brush wires before installation.I
  5. May be, may be not. The resistive load adds some damping / buffering into the system to stop the generators inverter and the Ecoflow charger from interacting so much. An isolation transformer may do this but you would need to test it. Certainly adding a resistive load is a well tried method that does work in some of these cases.
  6. Yes, we came through Barbridge this morning, a veritable ghost town, space for 2 at the pub. There were also few boats moored above or below Cholmondeston lock apart from the 3 or 4 Anderson boats being turned around at Venetian.
  7. If you want it do do any of the nice to haves such as reduced power at tickover, control of alternator temperature, having a float stage or shutting down on BMS command etc. then you need to disable the existing regulator.
  8. Did you get today's update. Update on 06/10/2023: Our local team & engineers have been to site to investigate the failed tie bars within the tailgate of Lock 2, Stanthorne Lock, on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. We have established a method of repair and we’re now awaiting our specialist contractors to fabricate the necessary parts over the weekend which are required for the works, we anticipate the parts will be delivered early next week. Our teams and contractors will be returning to site Monday to commence the required work. A further progress update will be provided the afternoon of Monday 9 October.
  9. Think you have it backwards as that would be either 3.1bar or 0.75bar rather than the required 1.5bar. They need setting to roughly the pump cut IN pressure or about half the cut OUT pressure for maximum effect.
  10. One trick with recalcitrant washing machines that do not work from an inverter or generator is to run a resistive load at the same time. Something like a 100W old style filament light bulb (not a lower power or LED) or small heater. Somehow this can steady the waveform and allow the washing machine to start. It appears that having two sets of complicated electronics both trying to do things as the only items connected by a short cable does not work.

  12. Our diesel heater started doing this, investigation found that the fuses had surface corrosion from dampness in the engine hole. Cleaned up the contacts with some wet and dry and replaced the fuses. All was well after that. Something worth checking but may not be your issue.
  13. From memory all 6 boats were in, but now you mention the costs it is a good saving regardless. When we stayed the VMs just outside the museum were also.pretty full.
  14. Nos 1 and 2 are further from the Holiday Inn which has air conditioning units outside that make some noise. However when we visited last year we got No 6 bevause it was the only one left and the ac did not bother us.

  17. My 2020 Beta43 / PRM150 came with both gearbox and engine connected to the same sump pump with a valve on each pipe. When I told the boat fitter that I wanted this he said it was standard now.

I am going to make a wild guess without the benefit of any hard data that some CRT "facilities" that get more use by boats without a home mooring are the licensing, enforcement and legal departments.
  19. When we were first looking we went to a broker and had chosen a few boats to look at from their website. When we told them which boat we wanted to look at first they replied "are you sure ?". That set off alarm bells, the on line photos had been judiciously cropped and a bath mat strategically placed over the huge crack in the side of the hip bath amongst other issues.
  20. David, See the stoppage notive below for location. The are just called Endon Services and they are at Park Lane, I mixed them together. There must be loads around the CRT network that I do not know about because of I have not travelled everywhere. Another self pumpout I have used is Hebden Bridge, Rochdale canal. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/1314-endon-customer-service-facility-park-lane-endon-staffordshire-st9-9ja
  21. Have you looked at the CRT published list on non-CRT pump outs. The link to this is part way down this page https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/boating/go-boating/boat-facilities-and-services/water-points-and-sewage-disposal Or direct at Non CRT pump outs, Secondly, you do not have any of the CRT self service pump outs at their larger customer service facilities. Unluckily, CRT do not appear to have a list of their pump outs, you will either need to find them on the CRT waterway guides, CRT on line map or guides such as the Nicholsons maps. CRT Waterway Guides CRT Interactive Map For example I have used CRT pump outs at Endon Lane, Caldon Canal Maesbury, Montgomery Canal Grindley Brook, Llangollen Canal Plank Lane, Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Leigh Branch Litherland, Leeds & Liverpool Canal Spark Bridge, Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Rufford Branch Dudley, Black Country Museum, BCN
  22. My previous boat which I self installed a lot of kit I had a Sterling mains battery charger, no name 2000W inverter from Photonic Universe, Epever Tracer MPPT and for monitoring a voltmeter and shunt plus ammeter. It all worked well and nothing caught fire. The only minor niggle was the Epever Traver which sometimes did not track max power st times, which is a known issue if the panels are high voltage low current in series, would have been better in parallel. My current boat was a new build in 2021 and for this I have the full Victron system with central Cerbo GX. The build quality is high, the performance is excellent and as someone who reads the manuals well documented and easily understood. The integration and ventral control is brilliant, the measures of battery voltage, charge current and temperature taken by the battery monitor are shared with the inverter/charger, MPPT and any other interested charging device. Remote data recording to the Victron cloud can be set up for no cost so you can check on system performance which is great for downloading.
  23. It has been going on for some time, I recall it being mentioned by CRT in e!ails anout water shortages in the past couple of yearsstating that the EA were now limiting river water top ups that they had normally used. One I do know of was at Luddenden Foot on the Rochdale. I think another was CRTs wish to extract from the River Goyt bevause the water from Todd Brook that they would normally have taken into the reservoir was now being lost to the River Goyt. I can not recall if they did get a license for this or not or if it was just a long process.

Luckily CRT have some government money, some investment income and some income from water utilisation and if they did not have these boaters would need to pay 4 times as much. People keep forgetting that their costs are subsidised. What other accommodation is subsidised to this tune.
  25. Yes, the potential upcoming unknown changes are an issue. I was reading some stuff on Nordkyn Design who appear to be knowledgeable. Taking one extract from the page I link to below The simplest safe lithium installation: leaving a sealed lead-acid battery in parallel with the lithium bank at all times allows disconnecting the lithium capacity in case of problem without any issues. The additional SLA doesn’t contribute to any meaningful capacity; its function is ensuring charging sources always see a battery in circuit. https://nordkyndesign.com/electrical-design-for-a-marine-lithium-battery-bank/
