  1. - soon to be overshadowed by a massive housing development I'm afraid
  2. This is all very well if the water levels are maintained........
  3. - not like the trend elsewhere when the powers-that-be reduced the width of the canal I dare say for cost reasons - eg , Sutton Stop, Ellesmere Port , Atherstone pound etc etc - although sometimes it is to increase the width of the cycle track (sorry towpath) eg Worcester and B'ham canal at B'ham end
  4. Some people have suggested that it would be better left as it is - no signs everywhere, no sanitary stations, no boat moorings etc etc - lots of peace and quiet for those on foot.........!
  5. Clypeus had the wooden bottom replaced in steel at Gloucester, and to do so they cut it in half to get it inside - the rejoining was not very good so Ian Kemp when working on it after being sold off shortened it slightly to get rid of the untidy bit!
  6. At 4.22 it's outside the Greyhound at Sutton Stop, mineral line to the "Light" in the distance
  7. Charlie Atkins and Joe (never heard him called Josh - that on his cabin side a shortened form of Joseph) Skinner appear several times, the former seen at Wheelock. I have seen it all before, but nice to see it again nonetheless, my favourite bit the Waterways boats at Newbold!
  8. It's below Leighton Lock beyond the swingbridge - I think it was taken at the same time as an earlier ebay slide ISTR
  9. The Hawkesbury had a little boat rams head when Kim McGavin had it!
  10. While on the subject of the fore end of a boat, no self-respecting boater would have a "baggy" deckcloth as so often seen these days - great pains were taken to get them taut before being scrubbed. I suspect, though, that as many people have plastic/pvc cloths that getting them taut would prove difficult
  11. Spot on Tony - but I have seen a picture of George Wain with the "Fenny" rigged up like that so it wasn't unheard of!
  12. Perhaps it's time for CRT to buy waterside property to prevent it being developed and save canal users from endless residential corridors and the (sometimes) accompanied antisocial behaviour!
  13. Perhaps I should have said working boaters of the past!
  14. While on the subject of this tunnel, I have only ever heard boaters refer to this as Hatton tunnel
  15. Same here - but it hasn't got any better overall though in that time ( - yes I know it was only built as a shallow horse boat canal....!)

Not ideal as the hot air would want to rise and get drawn back in to the fan

The hole for the cooling air inlet in front of the fan is clearly visible - but with the panels fitted, where was the hot air supposed to exit? (- given that in the picture of Phil Garrett, the panels appear to go around the rear of the unit) It must be that the panels were meant to be removed when the engine was running!

I don't know where this "Harbourmaster 4 cylinder diesel outboard engine" idea came from - these had Petter PD2s fitted to the drive units originally, the Thames Conservancy may well have replaced them when in their ownership.

The last one looks more like Phil Garrett to me!
  20. Porthole put there by then owner Peter Blecksley at Lapworth in ISTR 1970s
  21. Could well be - If that is indeed a child in the butty's slide ole then it wouldn't be in the 1938/9 period that Mr Pearsall had these boats as he had no children. He was aged around 38 then
  22. The cabin towing stud would be the removable one for the butties cabin roof when using the running blocks, the 2 tillers would mean there's a spare. No mention though of the mast pulley for use with the running blocks.
  23. I've not seen another, I don't know if others exist. This is my own, it came from Arthur Pearsall many years ago. It raises several questions eg why running blocks for a motor - and what is the last handwritten entry?
  24. Inventory added for those who may not have seen this before!
