  1. I’ll soon be looking to replace our battery bank which is 3 x 200ah Victron AGM batteries. The current batteries are about 10 years old and for the last 3 1/2 years we’ve been off grid. Our charging regime consists of a built in 9kva generator, 300w solar and 140amp engine mounted alternator. The inverter/charger is a Victron multiplus 3000/120. The inverter is on 24/7 as it powers a 240v AAA rated fridge and a diesel fired range which provides cooking, heating and hot water. I’m more than happy with how the Victron batteries have performed and would be happy to replace like for like. However the Gel version are slightly more expensive and according to the Victron figures would give a longer service life. Could anyone tell me which is likely to be more suitable given my circumstances?
  2. I have a Honda EU20 portable generator which is used for battery charging. When this is plugged into the shoreline socket the reverse polarity indicator light illuminates. I have read elsewhere on a motorhome forum that this is caused by the generator Earth not being tied to the neutral line. If this is the case do I need to make up a correction lead with the Earth and neutral tied?
  3. My wife was shortlisted last year in the same competition with this photo of Ilford. She didn’t win but was flattered to have been shortlisted given the number of entries submitted. The award ceremony was held on HQS Wellington.

  7. We learned a valuable lesson when we sold our first boat. We needed a quick sale in order to fund the purchase of another boat which I knew wouldn't be around long. We priced the boat at a loss to get a quick sale and were inundated with interest. Less than two years later it appeared for sale again and sold for more than we had originally paid for it. A hard and valuable lesson was learned!
  8. I once watched a bloke trying to steer into a lock on the middlewich branch using only his bowthruster. Needless to say it provided a few minutes lighthearted entertainment.
  9. Wonderful. As mentioned in a previous post it's only when you study other painters work that their particular styles become apparent. Only last week we were passing through Audlem when an elderly gentleman walking his greyhound stopped and commented that the artwork on Mervyn was the work of Dave Moore.
  10. I've contemplated taking on M & J and giving the Llangollen fuel run a go on several occasions but the large reduction in our income and the fact that we'd have to sell our current boats has always made me think twice.
  11. We'll be arriving by boat on Saturday along with Effingham.

  14. Simple question. I'll be feeding 6mm double insulated solar cable underneath the roof lining. Will this need protection from the spray foam insulation? It's double insulated, UV resistant and abrasion resistant 6mm cable.
  15. If I connect via the shunt is there a limit to how many connections can be fitted to a single post? There's already 2 connections on the load side of the shunt.
  16. I'm about to wire in a MPPT solar charge controller and am unsure whether the negative cable can go direct to the batteries or will it need to go via the shunt that's fitted for the BMV battery monitor. At the moment there are no negative connections to the batteries other than the shunt negative and smart gauge negative.
  17. We recently found out that my wife's great grandparents operated a horse boat serving the potteries. We think they ran from Runcorn to Stoke and the boat may have been called wild rose or something similar. Information is sketchy at the moment until we speak further with her relatives. Where would I start to search for more information?
  18. The replacement A++ rated replacement Liehberr fridge is quoted at 0.255 kw/h per day. using Alan de Enfield formulas that would take 25.5 ah from the batteries. Add that to the 48ah taken by the inverter and you have 73.5 ah compared 66 ah for the 12v waeco. Given that we need the inverter on for some periods of the day to power the range it would appear that sticking with 240v is the answer. any comments on my conclusions? Maths and electrical stuff isn't my strong point so I may have got something wrong.
  19. That's what I suspected however the inverter needs to be on for some periods of the day to power the diesel range which is providing our cooking, heating and hot water. Also don't forget we are off grid with built in diesel generator and 300w of solar due to be fitted.
  20. Perfect. I can now make some sense of it all, thanks.
  21. Yep, several times and I'm still non the wiser as to what those specific figures are telling me.
