  1. If it was in a boatyard, marina or somewhere where you could see a manager or worker, I would report it to them. Anywhere else which is not "manned", dump your stuff and get away very quickly, Oh and maybe hose down a little and make sure you leave no fingerprints in the crap over the tiles !! Edit to add: I have a pumpout Head down now and get my coat !
  2. Sunday 5th October for the mini clean up on the Slough Arm of the GU. Meet at bridge 7 at 1000hrs and move to bridge 6. 2 hours max.
  3. I have a bit of 2" pipe sticking above the rear deck and a threaded cap which just screws down. Any advice on making this lockable. Don't tell anyone the name of my boat eh!
  4. Great security. They tell everyone about it, show everybody pictures of it so all the baddies have to do is put it out of action by ramming or sinking and the mobile HQ is out of action. Or is it a cunning plan m'Lord ?
  5. Not in the cut but in the Thames. Moving boat, let the stern rope go before I was in control and the boat said bye, bye so I took a leap of faith and missed. Straight in the river complete with phone, fags and wallet. Managed to grab the stern rope and eventually hauled myself back on board whilst the current took me downstream. I'll probably fall in the cut tomorrow for posting this!!!
  6. Hi Blackrose, I think great might have been a little OTT but for the price the food is both adequate and tasty. I know that there are a lot of other pubs doing food but the prices go up and are they actually more nutritious than the Spoons food. TBH, I've never had a bad meal in a Spoons and believe me I've been in quite a few now. But hey, everyone to their own eh !! Are you anywhere up this end? cause I noticed a lovely black wide beam at Berko when I did my rece yesterday
  7. I am going that way this weekend or early next week. I was thinking of mooring between bridge 142 and 141 near The Crystal Palace (I think), or between bridge 141 and lock 53 on the bend (not actually ON the bend though). Probably stay for a couple of weeks. If you do a short walk from bridge 141 into the high street you are met with The Crown (Wetherspoons). Great pub grub and prices for ale. Any further thoughts?
  8. That IS one of the drawbacks. If you are able to join more than one library, as I have done, then you MIGHT find the other missing book there. Other than that , Amazon might have it for the Kindle, but of course you will have to pay for that book. Anyway, as I'm sure you will agree, it's a far better way to read than having the actual book on board as they take up soooo much space.
  9. Just got back on the forum and read your post. Not sure as to the question as you've placed a question mark at the end of your sentence. I see that you don't show the name of your boat on your avatar thingy. Do you actually live on a boat? In my mind the whole idea of living on a boat is to slow down and relax and the most relaxing thing, apart from sleeping, is to read. I apologise if I sense an undertone of sarcasm or derision in your post.
  10. The Kindle, as we know, is joined at the hip to Amazon so one has to pay for books (well decent books anyhow) but if you buy a Kobo from W H Smith AND join your local library and any other library you can, with the Kobo, you are able to download library books and "borrow" them for 7, 14 or 21 days. After the agreed time limit, they will disappear from the Kobo and be returned to the library. All for free and no late return charges!! I have both and it works really well. I purchase the books I want to keep on the Kindle and borrow from the library on the Kobo.
  11. If she is out of the water and "empty" as you say, then for around £300 you might as well have a full hull survey. I puts your mind at ease as well as satisfying the insurance requirements. It would be a bugg*r if she was back in the water then to find out you need a survey!!
  12. Have a look on the famous "Apollo Duck" thingy
  13. Well, look on the bright side. I'm single handed and recently (about 6 weeks ago) came up the GU from Hunton Bridge 162 and waited in lock 71 for another boat I could see in the near distance. The man at the tiller thanked me for waiting. It turned out that it was a boat from the Reach Out Projects based at Nash Mills taking a group of newbies out for a trip. It was great as their crew did all the next 4 locks for me and all I had to do was wait and enter and leave locks. Be nice and it may bring benefits.
  14. Hi, My boat was built in C1975 and I've had it for 3 years. Only this year (July) did they require a full hull survey and a valuation for me to renew insurance. The last survey was about 5/6 years ago. I'm with Collidge & Partners. 50' narrow cruiser, fully comp and £10,000 personal effects, generator, bike for around £250.
  15. "Jules' Fuels" passed me be by going down the GU at bridge 151 Hemel Hempstead this afternoon. All the fuel you can expect. Nice couple. Oh, by the way, no connection or involvement!!
  16. Well, this topic has shown how we are all different when it comes to likes and dislikes of music. I can honestly agree with all posts, some I like and others I hate. What REALLY gets to me though is the boom - boom - boom culture and the twa*s that have all their car windows open (even when its freezing or pouring down) so that we can all hear their dreadful taste in generic music.
  17. Needless to say it's a wee bit different than doing 3mph on a canal. Make sure you get all the charts, know all about lighthouses and their differing light sequences, learn to use a compass, sextant, have plenty of underwear changes available but above all, take care to follow the mooring laws as attached photo will demonstrate.

  20. Both adverts state that mooring should be discussed with CRT. I wonder how much they will be asking on top of the purchase cost?
  21. No harm no foul Sir Nibble and the answer to your question : No not since 1990 !!!
  22. Ah, what to do eh! Bite and think this is a blatant act of aggression to commence a heated debate. Reply to say at no time was I complaining as I pointed out in my post as it does not affect me; or reply to say that not all overstaying is down to the dick on board. He could be dead and I was suggesting that us boaters should be on the lookout for each other. Nope, I think I'll keep quiet. It's a good joke though.
  23. Are you ok MtB. Southern Star is replying to my post about a totally different situation. D
  24. A similar thing has happened/is happening to me as we type. I am moored opposite a CRT visitor 24hr mooring on a Sainsbury bank (you have to cut through a gap in the hedge to get to said shop). There has been a boat there for 4 days now. (1) I have been considering letting CRT know; but why should I as there is a CRT chappie with one of those electronic pad thingys I have seen at least once in the week I have been here. (2) I could go and have a chat to him and point out the error of his ways; but why should I as it's really none of my business and he's not making my life a misery. (3) I should really go over and see if in actual fact he is ok; this I decide to do as it's the right thing to do, I'll go tomorrow morning. Just saw the chap getting back on board a few hours ago. I do not know, or wish to know the circumstances as to why he is blatantly overstaying on a 24hr mooring which is very handy for the store. The dick.
