  1. Fuelboat Halsall has a sad postscript to this, yet another sale of canal heritage. Can't be much left now but this makes the sale even sadder: So sad to see this lock cottage up for sale. The tenant was a very knowledgeable & hardworking & helpful member of CRT staff & British Waterways for many years He delayed his retirement & did numerous additional tasks outside his main role, including monitoring water levels locally & keeping the workboats in his care in great condition. He would have been looking forward to spending his retirement with his family in their home beside the cut, but like in so many similar situations all CRT see is pound notes, not the loyalty, pride & care off their long serving staff on the ground
  2. There is only one boat licence regardless of whether you have a mooring or continuous cruise, despite what CRT try to imply. So, as mrsmelly says.
  3. But he didn't mean better for boaters did he, hence 'by water'? It actually makes little sense without 'the' added or maybe he means travelling by water, as in a means of transport, who knows.
  4. It's been a really good year for rats (if you're a rat) so definitely suspect Weil's if you have flu like symptoms. I always walk along the 'hedge' side of the towpath because if a cyclist gets too close, I would much prefer them going for a dip rather than me.
  5. Sign up for the EA's flood alerts too, there can be frequent and lengthy 'SSA's' when navigation is stopped.
  6. But the bins will be replaced with temporary ones 'in the New Year', according to CRT.
  7. Here's the latest: Further investigations have concluded that Network Rail are not responsible for the offside land between Bridge 131, Knolles and Bridge 132A, Backford Railway on the Shropshire Union Canal. Whilst the land still belongs to a third party, we have taken the decision to remove the tree with our contractors to speed up the removal. We have now negotiated access to the third-party land to remove the tree with an excavator and our contractors are currently arranging the required equipment. Our contractors will be onsite next week. This removal remains a priority for the Trust and our contractors are aiming to remove the tree so we are able to re-open navigation by Wednesday, 22 December. An update will be provided by Wednesday 22 December.
  8. Please let us know when you find it.
  9. This year's APM was last Monday, via youtube so there was no public participation apart from pre-submitted questions at the end. Viewers averaged around 35 in number and it mainly featured presentations by various new directors. The message was that the canal network is improving and the trustees think that it's all well run. If you're having trouble sleeping, here's the link:
  10. Apparently it's because EA haven't yet decided on their boat licence charges following their boaters' consultation about making changes in the summer.
  11. Crown is a group of suppliers according to this: https://www.crownoil.co.uk/news/star-oil-joins-the-crown-oil-group/
  12. Speedy is owned by Crown. Will be interested to read if and where you succeed.
  13. Less than 500L was not possible when I spoke to them last but will be interested to hear what they say.
  14. Crown won't supply small amounts and Nth Kilworth is presumably too far away. It is like an echo chamber on here sometimes!
  15. Try Jonathon Mosse of the IWA, jonathan.mosse@waterways.org.uk, as the only places I know that have it are North Kilworth and Ron Gooding's boatyard on the Lee which aren't much help to you!
  16. Yes I know but this would be illegal under the 1995 Act. Sadly boater apathy will let CRT continue to do whatever they like, even when it will have a potentially negative affect.
  17. I can only see 3 categories here. There is no such thing as a 'continuous cruising' licence, just one boat licence although I suppose if CRT keep saying this enough times, it might be accepted as legit. by some. At least this does confirm from the 'horse's mouth'that CRT cannot stipulate how far 'bona fide' travel is, even though they do stipulate!
  18. Think how much saving there would be on sewage going straight in to water courses if all householders, let alone boaters, were encouraged to use separating loos instead of Victorian style flush, with the infrastructure in place to collect it for compost. Time for a total rethink on how we manage our human waste?
  19. And it helps if boaters are knowledgeable as many suppliers still don't know what HVO is.
  20. Floating traders have been asked to join in the Walsall Continental Market in December to trade in the basin. AFAIK, there has been very little interest which is a real shame but understandable I suppose.
  21. Apologies for resurrecting such an elderly thread but - just been discussing this with the boatyard currently blacking the boat for us. They say, it makes no difference. Can't find much on google but we've always made sure not to get bitumen on the anodes as far as is possible. Any thoughts?
  22. I'll suggest it. The Thames one came about because it seemed incredible that boaters there won't mind their licence fees going up by 10% over the next 2 years, according to the EA from the consultation results.
