'Unintended acceleration'

Just bought a 1993 Viking 23 with Mariner 15. On first test outing motor increases revs when helm hard over. Assume this is a throttle cable problem (remote throttle and gear control). Can anyone advise or direct me to a source of info. The relevant Seloc manual for the Mariner 15 does not cover maintenance on the remote control. Thanks. Chris.

Throttle cable will be a 'bowden' cable (like a brake cable on a bicycle) with an external sheath and an internal 'wire'.

The external sleeve will be clamped firmly down whilst the end of the inner cable will be terminated on the engine throttle.

It sounds as if the clamp on the outer cable may have slipped so that when the engine is 'hard over' the inner cable is pulling the throttle (when it shouldn't)

Check the outer sleeve clamp and see if there is a mark on the sleeve that may have been the 'correct position' before it slipped.

 

Its easier to do than it is to explain how to do it.

I think you will find the inner "cable" is stainless piano type wire for push/pull operation it could be the outer sheath that has broken near the clamp point on the motor

... which are very useful as cable fish wires for getting wires through narrow gaps...
