Fed with a solenoid pump makes them pretty well there in my opinion, but then in some peoples eyes, that's not worth much.

Well that has a more obvious cause. Air being compressible and water being effectively incompressible. And the pump being suction rather than pressure. When the pump is sucking hard against an obstruction it pulls a bit of a vacuum. That means the air is less dense and easier for a spinny thing to spin around in.
