Victron Inverter Help needed - Multiplus

Lanners

Featured Posts

Well I presently very happy with Sterling's 40A job, with the optional remote control in the saloon. Does exactly what it says on the box, and at a good price.

Many folk will poo-poo Sterling stuff, but on and off over the years, I've had several good Sterling chargers on different boats and always been happy.

I've had TWO Victron Multipluses die on me in the last 6 years. Just saying!

Mastervolt for me. I'm sure sterling stuff is fine but I just can't get over the multicoloured, complex and seemingly amateurish front panels of sterling stuff. Perhaps I'm just too superficial!

Fair comment but surely not a negative having most of the instruction manual on the casing. I find it adds an artistic touch of colour as well rolleyes.gif

Good to know,

And are the warranties good? - are they in the UK?

I'm pretty shocked that mine has to go all the way to the Netherlands TBH!

Sterling or mastervolt? For MV I suspect they mostly have to go to the Netherlands. For sterling it's uk. On the other hand, if the MV never goes wrong, does it matter where it has to be sent for repair?

Re warranties I would look at the Sunny Island kit. You can buy extra long warranties.

Re fixing Victron, there are places in the uk you can get them fixed once out of warranty.

I find that very useful sometimes! Sterling's case art definitely looks a bit amateurish, but mine is mostly out of sight so I don't find that a problem. I have never had Mastervolt stuff, but I am aware that it's all good gear. Probably a big price difference to Sterling's though, and Sterling will be simpler to get fixed under warranty - but I have never had to do that!

These people repair inverters, chargers etc. They can repair older models such as Masterrvolt Dakar Combi's. Although I didnt get it fixed as it cured itself, they quoted me around £250 to repair a MV Dakar Combi 12/2500/100 about two years ago and they give a warranty. Aquafax, MV and others said "non-repairable, buy a new one".

I took my last Victron Combi to a local electronic engineering company in Nantwich last year, who seemed confident they could replace a burned-out component and replace it.

They were correct in that there was a burned-out component, but it turned out to be a very specialised thyro-self-inhibiting hoonyacker which they could not source. Specifically designed for Victron, allegedly. I took back my big cables and left them with the pretty blue box. I had to have an inverter right away, so I lost interest in the massive faff involved in getting it repaired by Victron.

Yes I agree that their cases are nicely coloured and built of stern stuff, but did I mention that I've now lost TWO of them!!

I presume thats SMA, who also make the red SunnyBoy PV inverter?

Certainly they appear to have got the PV inverter market all but totally sewn up, and when I was on the Isle of Eigg they where using the Sunny Island inverters on the grid they have their, along with the Sunny Boy for the PV install.

Hi All,

Just to finish up on this, I returned the inverter to Victron via Bardens, they said a charge fuse had gone which was behind the 12v charger circuit, plus they said it had some PCB damage.

They fixed and returned for £150 odd, not too bad I suppose considering the delivery too.

Hopefully someone will find this helpful in the future :)
