Boat selling

Good evening all, I have recently inherited a Viking 23 4 berth canal boat, it is in great condition but I know nothing about boats. It is now becoming a burden as it's costing me money to keep it. I want to sell it ASAP and was hoping someone out there would know where is the best site/magazine etc that I could sell it with.... I'm pulling my hair out at the moment. eBay seems the easiest website but I'm not sure if it would be better on a specialist site..... Please could anyone help.

If you know nothing don´t even think about selling it yourself. Put it with your local marina and you´ll get no pitfalls.

We've always used Apolloduck. One off payment if you want a featured advert with more than one photo, Free (I think) if you only want one photo. Most people check out the duck regularly, even if not in the market for a boat, but are just interested about whats for sale

If you want to be at the beck and call of all and sundry, boat kickers, agents trying to get you to put it with them etc. etc. put it on Apollo Duck.

 

If you want to sit back and wait to be told it is sold, put it with a broker/marina.

 

Another advantage is the broker will know at what price to put it on the market for.

 

Yes you will have to pay them a percentage but that is for their expertise.

Using a broker to sell a boat is not cheap, typically they charge between 5 And 6 %, however it is worth every penny in my opinion, particularly if the boat is not close by and you have to travel some distance to meet people for viewings. You only need a couple of 'no shows' for it to become a very frustrating experience.

 

You should also choose your broker carefully, it is relatively easy to look at web sites and see who takes care in photographing the boat well and presenting the boat in a way that makes people want to come and view it in the flesh. A good broker will also be realistic in suggesting what you should ask for the boat and will deal with the inevitable time wasters and fender kickers. Asking more for the boat than you can realistically be expected to achieve is really a waste of your time.

 

I too therefore would be inclined to broker it and just wait for a call with an offer.....

I would guess that two of the reasons boat brokerages charge a higher percentage of the sale price than estate agents charge for house sales are firstly that the average boat sells for far less than the average house, and secondly that the boat brokerage have to physically keep the item for sale on their premises, possibly for several months.

I'd recommend the brokerage route too. We sold ours through ABC and it was sold within 2 weeks for £500 off the asking price! They dealt with everything and can lift out/black/do any work that the new buyer wanted. Took just over 6 weeks from start to finish.
