mooring in the Vale birmingham

Whenever the topic of mooring in Birmingham comes up someone says there are pleasant moorings in the Vale on the Worcester and Birmingham. Can anyone explain quite where they mean. Strikes me as a useful stopping point without having to leave the Birmingham area altogether.

The Vale! (see the little grey icon?) And it's recently been revamped with mooring rings and a shiny new towpath surface. Nice spot a for a BBQ/picnic and only 20-30 min cruise from the city centre.

The particular area is between the newish Selly Oak aqueduct and the winding hole by the university moorings. Quite a pleasant spot with some piling to moor to. Can be a bit noisy because of the railway. Short walk over the bridge into the university complex. Some of towpath is brick edged so can't be moored to easily.

You just need to be aware that the towpath is heavily used in this area by both pedestrians and cyclists travelling between the university and city centre.. Also, a main commuter rail line is only a few yards away, so not the most peaceful of places.

The brick edged bit now has mooring rings

The railway line is well set back behind trees. Certainly a lot quieter than many off the popular moorings on the south Oxford where the railway really is right alongside the canal.

We've always loved mooring on the 14 day moorings on the new main line but not sure how that will work out now the fiddle &bone has reopened and services are there. I'm really pleased to see both in use though.

This is odd surely Birmingham is on a hill.

Exactly. So, useful to have somewhere to go away from the city centre without having to leave the Birmingham plateau.

You can go quite a way without coming off the plateau though, top of Lapworth locks for example
