Such as jim did?

Indeed....and there is nothing to stop Tony or anyone else standing.

It's no good complaining an organisation doesn't support you how you might have liked if you don't want to be part of its structure.

I haven't been part of any committee in any part of my life that hasn't had disagreements but resigning and going off in a huff rarely leads to any change of heart or direction.

Cheers

Moving the topic on slightly, I thought about joining a boating group quite a bit last year, I have looked at a few and at one point the RBOA looked to suit my needs best. Unfortunately, my fears were founded as with most boating groups seem to be led from a position of crippling subjectivity that could never represent it's membership let alone it's own committee.

The strength in these groups is it's leadership, a leadership that's ego doesn't battle with it's purpose.

I am struggling to remember his name but the RBOA chair came to a campaigning meeting we organised a few years ago.

His ineffectual and platitudinous manner is probably the main reason I'm not a member when perhaps I should be.

My overwhelming imoression was that they were not interested in the issues of boats without moorings and of those with moorings they wouldn't approach any issues of contention, leaving me wondering what exactly it was they did do barring selling stickers.

I am not really surprised they didn't offer Tony any support.

Dog House, can you please stop taking the thread off topic?

Gareth, are you going to the egm in February?

It's the plan at the moment....unless work gets in the way...

I didn't make the AGM due to other commitments and I must admit I've stayed out of committees of any organisation due to my work part of life not leaving enough time as it would need however knowing the hard work Beryl and others put in it annoys me when others come along and rubbish all the hard work people put in with little or no thanks.

Cheers

I'd be interested to hear your view of what positive contributions she has made.

Well I'm not getting into who did and said what on here, but I will be attending the egm along with others to voice concerns.

Well you just seem to want a fight...sorry I'm not going to give you the pleasure....however I will say that Beryl has worked, lived on and supported the canals for a good part of her life, attending meetings...helping others and sharing knowledge....what have you done?

As I understand it the EGM is mainly to do with the raising of the subs rate.

Like any organisation there are things that could be changed...but like many organisations no one wants to have the hassle of helping run it...and I include myself in that. I have a few ideas that might help reduce overheads and//or make membership better value but I also respect others that have given quite a lot of time over the years to what is a very thankless task.

I hope it is a profitable meeting and a way forward can be achieved....I'm also fairly sure the committee would welcome some new blood...I know that they even struggle for any articles for the magazine at the moment.

Cheers

Does the scope of this 'hard work' go beyond dissuading the Chairman from doing anything which might earn the disapproval of C&RT, and organizinging the joint signing of the Memorandum of Obsequiousness with them ?

Gosh. That wasn't an invitation to a fight it was a genuine question.

Pot. Kettle and Black.

I'll take that answer as 'nothing' then?

It could be that due to them doing bugger all if there's any prospect of it leading to disagreement with C&RT that there's nothing to write about.

No, there was no explanation given. They were initially appalled and surprised by what C&RT were doing and supportive of my position. Following a telephone conversation with Alan Wildman, who wanted more details about what was happening, he said he would speak to Beryl McDowell, mainly because she was near to Nottingham and would know the Enforcement Orifice concerned. A short time later, having spoken with Ms. McDowell he called me back and, rather sheepishly wished me the best of luck and said he hoped I'd be successful, adding that they would be grateful if I would let them know the outcome.

I think the reasons stated by the new Chairman for resigning are very understandable.

Okay I can only think of these possible reasons:

1) Beryl McDowell knew you well, and decided to not support your "side", without needing to hear from the other side/viewpoint.

2) Beryl didn't know you (that well) and based on some info of a short period of time, decided not to support your "side", without hearing the other side, in a quick decision.

3) Beryl listened to both sides of the argument thoroughly and came to her own conclusion that RBOA should/would not support you.

4) Beryl is somehow too closely linked with CRT/BW or values her own personal interests/business which may have been affected by supporting you.

5) Berly/RBOA simply decided not to support you based on time/money constraits, or apathy, choosing to either do something else more constructive with their time/money or simply remaining somewhat inactive.

It seems you've not really needed the support of RBOA anyway, given the current outcome of your court hearing/whatever is it at the moment.

I also used to be a member. I didn't bother renewing after it took them months to respond to something I needed help with, and even then it was only an acknowledgment. I simply didn't see any point in remaining a member. It doesn't surprise me that they're struggling to keep members and fill up their newsletter with articles. To be honest, being involved in these forums and 1 or 2 facebook groups, provides me with far more advice and support than being a member of the RBOA.

I became a member of the BCNS due to taking part in the challenge last year and they seem to be a far more active and inclusive group. I've had prompt replies from Brenda, John etc when I've asked something. They seem to be in it for the good of the cause, rather than feathering their own nest.

The problem here is that Beryl and the RBOA are not synonymous, surely?

In reality they are of course different entities, but at least in TD's case Beryl was the driving force behind RBOA's action (or lack of).

Surely the issue of Tony's court case is important enough to residential boaters that they should have been involved in some capacity, even if to publically support CRT and give their reasons.

Outside of the rights or wrongs of the case it is still a vital issue for liveaboard boaters and inconceivable that a national organisation wouldn't have a view.

If he was a member at the time (Tony hasn't confirmed this) then they also have a duty to support and represent him regardless of personal opinion.

All of these points (whatever the reasons behind them) make them unfit for purpose in my opinion.

Thanks for explaining all that . . . . are we going to hear from Sybil Fawlty next, on the specialist subject you appear to share.

But surely the idea of joining a boating group, such as RBOA or NABO, is to join like minded people who, together, have much more say in matters than does the individual when dealing with Canal and River Trust.

To this end, although I am at present a member of both, I may drop one as it doesn't seem to get its head above the embankment very much, or very high.
