Initially we were drawn to trads but I have started to look at things like this

Vessel name: Navis Vega Vessel condition: Used Vessel type: Dutch Cruiser Designer: A.K. Helmers Model: 39' Steel Dutch Cruiser Year constructed: 1977 No. of engines: 1 Engine model: DAF 575 6cyl Engine power: 120 Engine hours: 1327 Fuel type: Diesel Crusing Speed: 7 Knots Maximum Speed: 10 Knots Nominal length: 39' Length over all: 39' Beam: 11' 9" Maximum draft: 3' 10" Hull material: Steel Hull type: Displacement Hull colour: Blue Fuel capacity: 450 Litres Water capacity: 1000 Litres

Would we be severely restricted on the Canal Network on a vessel of this type? Would we be able (having taken certain accedited courses) be able to go across to France etc. Thoughts please

Would you be able to find out what the air draft is?

Air Ht is probably similar to the 'Pedro' Style of boat, lots of this type when we done the French Canals, so am guessing not a problem over there at all (probably around the 2.6mtr in hight), again am guessing but looks a Category 'C' vessel so coastal & chanal crossing is fine, (conditions depending). I like them, lots of space aboard.

We have friends who have similar Dutch vessels based on the Fossdyke, Witham, Trent, Ouse etc. They dont have any issues with the bridge heights in this sort of area.

More of an issue for them is draft. At getting on for 4ft they are a little on the deep side.

You tend to get a lot of boat for your money and there are plenty for sale so you can take your time and be a bit picky.

They offer a lot of accomodation in a handy sized vessel.

That's a nice estuary and coastal boat with the chance of summer trips to the continent given training and tools for the crew, but forget most of the UK canal system, it's too high, too wide and too powerful.

Keep it a Weymouth and the Channel Islands and France could be weekend destinations, Keep it at Medway to Ramsgate then France and the Low Countries are easy runs for a competent master and crew.
