Wearing my cyclists hat (or should it be helmet?), I don't think that pedal power would be very effective unless you are able to harness the power of a dozen or more fit cyclists. A few years ago, I did some power tests on my bike in the Sports Science lab of the local university. At the time I was fairly fit and my max power was only 330 watts ie 0.33kW and this was achieved just as I "blew up"

A more sustainable power output would have been in the order of 200 watts. If my conversion into old imperial units is correct, 200 watts is about 0.27hp. Probably not enough to move our 58 footer very far, and I certainly wouldn't be able to maintain that for 8 hours a day for a fortnight! :)

Cheers Dave,

This was the maths I needed, maybe I will have to settle for a 'Bow thruster' version!

Regards

It's only when you see long-ago but well remembered posters turn up that you realise a thread is 19 years old!

Gone, but not forgotten!

What's interesting is that Hairy Neil posted once last March after 11 years absence and disappeared again.

I missed it because I was on my sabbatical.

My first row on here was with him, 20+ years ago.

I seen this boat a few years ago when I was on the Llangollen, it was attracting a lot of attention! At less than £3k I'm actually tempted but I did notice at the time that it was very tender, possibly the only boat that could get you seasick on a canal. It also begs the question, what happened to Newt I and II 😅

It's literally on my doorstep and we have end of garden mooring too. If had a spare couple of grand I'd be tempted 🤣 wonder what the licence fee is.

Wonder how it would cope realistically with locks too...

As it's under 5m, portable and less that 4hp (2pp to be precise!) it qualifies for the 50% portable powered boat discount, so £366.25 for the year!

I did watch it go through a lock, they both got off and very easily bow hauled it in and out so no dramas. It's beam was narrow enough that they could leave the fenders down even in a narrow lock.
