mark99
I was moored and a noticed two tripods on the far bank aimed at our boat. One either end. Two photographers were I presume photographing our boat from various angles. Ok that's fine and flattering. Faintly amusing. I went in for some coffee, when I came out again 15 mins later one was still there getting more shots. Now I'm real easy going and not upset at all by this, but it does raise a question - at what point does a snap or two turn into a serious study taken <without asking> who owns the image rights? what if the image of your "thing" is used by professionals as a commerical image. That question was raised between us on board and we did not know the answer but I assume it must be set out clearly. I do recall at some time photographers were prevented taking snaps of public or interesting buildings on security grounds. Note there seems to be a lot of this happenning around the Uxbridge/Denham area - images of boats taken with tripod camera-men. Delta9
They can take photos of whatever they wish in public places and they will own the rights to the pictures. You have no expectation of privacy in public places. If they are using a telephoto lens to look through your windows and take pictures of you inside the boat, that is a different matter. It's also perfectly legal to take pictures of buildings from public areas, although sometimes you have to explain this to security personnel and police who don't understand the laws they are trying to enforce. Southern Star
what if the image of your "thing" is used by professionals as a commerical image. That's an interesting point. There are numerous photographers who specialise in truck photography and I get snapped approximately once a month or so, normally from motorway bridges. I just accept that as normal, but I wonder what the legal position would be in the (unlikely) situation that it started featuring in a global advertising campaign by Coca-Cola? I can't imagine that would be 100% kosher.
john6767
If they were on CRT property then that would need permission from CRT for commercial photography, there signs in central Birmingham, and I presume other "hot spots", to that effect. Info on that here.

mark99
You sure they were cameras and not surveying equipment or similar? Yup. Week before, another chap fell over backwards with his tripod trying to photo two boats locking out of Denham.
Naughty Cal
You just get used to it eventually! Can't remember the last time we didn't go somewhere and have our photo taken!
Mac of Cygnet
Several years ago pictures of my boat started to appear on some Northern Trains: Trevor, on the boat next to mine (you can just see him in the picture), enquired of the train company if he might get a copy of the picture, but they wouldn't even tell him who had taken it. We aren't bothered about any commercial return - in fact I rather like it when I travel (as I frequently do) with my boat on a train - but it would have been a nice gesture to have given us a copy.
