Things to do in Dry Dock

We are dry docking our new to us boat for re-blacking and some over plating, so is there anything else you would change as a matter of routine, like when you change a clutch in a car if you have the engine out that kind of idea and rough costs etc.

Also apart from removing the alternator and battery wires do we need to remove anything else ?

You could use the opportunity to see if there is any excessive wear in the stern tube bearing / prop shaft.

Basically you shouldn't be able to wiggle the prop up and down much, if at all.

If you can, it might be worth seeking advice as to whether it needs any urgent attention, or can wait until it is worse at a future ocking.

I'm not expecting you to find a problem, but you did ask!

Just sorting out the BSC and license in Meadow View Marina in Barrow Upon Soar, then steaming her to Chirk Marina and dry docking her at Trevor, so at least by the time we get her there we will know if she is reliable or not, plus with 105 locks the Mrs will have arms like popeye lol

Just to try and pre empt things how hard v costly is it to have a stern tube replaced ?

Not a big job normally, but if it needs both a new stern-gear and a new shaft the actual hardware would cost a fair amount before any labour, (it should be easy to get an idea from a site like Midland Chandlers, I'm guessing).

But seriously, don't worry about it - very few will need urgent attention - I'm just giving you the chance to satisfy yourself that yours does not have excessive play. I doubt it will, but worth knowing if it has, if only to understand it may need something done in the future.

Inspect your prop and check got any fishing line that's got caught between the prop and stern tube - including any that's gone up the shaft into the stern tube.

Give your anodes a quick going over with a wire brush after the pressure wash. It won't last long until algae and weed grows back over them but you may as well expose the magnesium while you can.

If you're not cleaning and painting the baseplate you should at least inspect it. Check any wear of the baseplate overhang.
