mark99
Is it possible to turn a 62 footer at Brentford to avoid the Thames?
blackrose
Yes, the basin just upstream of the marina is massive. Come under the railway bridge and turn before you get to the marina. You could even turn your boat at the other end of the basin just before the gauging lock, but it's not quite as easy and there is a weir at that end. Wanted
Plenty of room down ere, quite often see Pete swing a working pair about with no bother, I'd agree that you should tie up and go to the Magpie, great ale!

NigelMoore
Elthorne Park from Google Earth looks quite good for overnight mooring? any other decent spots near there? Getting close enough to the bank in order to moor has been a problem for years; supposedly at least part dredged since my last trip that way, but I wouldn't count on it. Once you leave Cowley it's all crap. Bulls Bridge is a dump but handy for a buying the heavy stuff at Tescos, and then there's the Fox is at the bottom of the Hanwell flight which is a nice mooring. There's loads of rubbish in the water in some places, so if you see it ahead take your engine out of gear and use the boat's momentum to take you through. If you need a bit of steering put it back into gear for a few seconds and then go back into neutral. Hope I'm not teaching granny to suck eggs, but the idea is that the less your prop is spinning through the rubbish, the less chance of it fouling your prop. tillergirl
We moored at Grove Mill Bridge 165, Denham Bridge 182, Hanwell and then onto Brentford when we went down earlier this year. The canal actually makes you want to gip at Southall.....................and mind the coconuts in the water. Don't want grandad round your prop Edited September 15, 2013 by tillergirl
