That does look suspiciously like the one Carlt linked to on Ebay

That's clearly the best solution, easy to install and reliable. And I don't want to go that way

I do have one of these:

Two of these would work perfectly, they are too big. I like the idea of single strike bells for signalling

Richard,

what you need is a 3 or 4 inch brass bell. I'd go straight to the clockmakers suppliers, and get one for an 8 day longcase clock. These bells are cheap, and have a good clear tone. Or if you really want a good one how about, including ships bells and bracket bells etc.

or cheaper (by far) is http://www.m-p.co.uk/, but you will have to download the catalogue.

You're using the wrong link for Meadows and Passmore: http://www.medmaw.com/cgi-bin/medmaw/medmaw.cgi?store=parts&mall_name=muk

I'm too much of a cheapskate for that. The pressed steel one I now have will do for a start, I may buy one of those cheap counter bells if I want something nicer, and I live in hope of picking up something cheap at Tamworth market on Monday

This is what came with my boat:-

The original engine was direct reversing, with no 'bridge control', so an engineer was needed below for reversing - in a 35' boat!. The engine is long gone, (I wonder why?) but the bell is still there & will be rerigged (just a thin wire cable, the pulleys are still in place)as soon as it gets to the top of the list.

My Byron 1200 bell has arrived today. If I tap it with a pen it makes a pleasing sound. Opening it up reveals a wire and a diode

So, capacitor and resistor size please MP

Richard

I'm not MP, and I don't play him on TV, but I'd try something like 100uF and 1k as a starter. If the bell only gives a half-hearted tiny ding then the cap's too small. If a second press on the button does nothing, then the resistor's too big.

Sorry, been away on the Celtic Fringe playing on Lumpy-water.

You already know the answer, but to complete this thread for posterity, it's:

1000uF and 100 ohms.

The capacitor should be electrolytic (so watch polarity) and at least 15v working voltage. 1W or 0.5W resistor.

I left the diode in circuit just because it made the wiring easier.

MP.
