Wobbly Dick
Hi Has anyone used the Canalplanner software for the PC? Comments please?
colinjw
Hi wobbly, I got Canal Planner a few years ago and I find it very helpful for planning trips of a few days and more. I will be going to the CP stand at Crick at the w/e as there is an updated version of it. I didn't bother with any update CD roms and apart from a glaring mistake on the Staffs and Worcs, I continue to use it. I find it very useful to plan a trip which MUST include pubs as we very rarely cook on board. If you have any queries about it, please do not hesitate to drop me a pm. Bernie
Have used it for years and found it invaluable at times for planning a trip. Sadly it is not updated via monthly downloads as it used to be since Syd died. I definitely think it's worth the money still though since you can print off details of routes etc.
Paul Evans
Like Bernie, I've used Canal Planner for a number of years and find it very useful as a planning aid. Buying it used to entitle you to monthly updates but, since Syd died, his son has not been able to maintain that side of things. The updates got rid of most of the early errors because Syd encouraged users to let him know about them and he sorted things out. I assume that the latest version also avoids the errors. nichimyo
I use http://www.canalplan.org.uk/ - Its free.... I use this too and find it's pretty good. As with everything, though, it's worth checking crucial bits of information such as maximum lengths of locks if your boat is close to the figure given. Also there's a few places where it cannot compute a route for you if your boat size is larger than the maximum given in its information. However, you may still be able to finds a route by saying your boat is a bit smaller, then double-check the actual length of the lock or whatever with the lock-keeper before you set off. Big John
I will be going to the CP stand at Crick at the w/e as there is an updated version of it. Is that definite then? No news on the website since 24 Jan 2006. I contributed a fair bit to Syd's version, so was hoping for an upgrade, but I think it will still cost me
Liam
I'm wondering why it's not possible to put the updated version on the website somewhere, available for download. Instead of burning the files to CD and then having the job of distributing these, just put the single file on a page and let people download it. Cost can't be an argument, as bandwidth is cheaper than CD's, unless they charge for the CD's and the postage.

Apologies - I've edited my post so that the link works now. I believe the problem it that the colour formating has got wound up into the url. Here we go. Although it come out back not blue.... Ahhhh well! I'm sure I put it together just as I usually do but you're dead right Dan. What a pile of poo! Anyway, it's right now but it is showing black rather than blue. It includes a whole range of facilities that would not be available on a website. You can create and save route files and export files to Excel for further editing. It has a reference section containing basic details of canals - that you can edit your own use, a gazetteer for information about towns and villages - you can add and edit entries - and over 6,000 picture files (most contributed by users of the program). On my machine, the Canal Planner folder occupies 405Mb. The current Version 6 costs £47.50 + £2.50 postage & packaging - reflecting the cost of developing, producing and maintaining the program. I suppose whether you buy or use a free web based planner depends on how much detail and utility you want. I think it's worth the money.
Paul Evans
I'm just wondering why my last post didn't appear at the top of the list of new posts. Will this one? Edit: It did so I can go to bed sure that all's right with the world. Edited May 23, 2006 by Paul Evans
