SATELLITE TV

In the UK if you assume you need to point the dish to 35 degrees east of south, you won't be far out, certainly within one degree for London Birmingham and Manchester. Or call it southeast-by-south if you prefer oldfashioned compass points.

The "28 degrees east" simply refers to the longitude of the satellite.

W've tried several solutions:

1) A portable HD satellite system (one of those that comes in a carry case) - worked OK, had built in sat finder but menus weren't very intuitive

2) Using a spare Sky box as a freesat box - this worked OK using the dish from the above but limited functionality]

So now we have:

3) Samsung Freesat Smart TV. This is fixed to the wall on a bracket, has built in satellite receiver, connects via our 3 One Plan to the net for iPlayer and other online servoces, can stream straight from any of our laptops or our media server and can record satellite TV onto a USB stick.

So we've done away with having a satellite box and a media player box and just have the TV - best thing we've done!

Can you get 12v sky boxes ? The set up from aldi,s is okay for bbc, itv and a few other channels but some of the channels that we normally get with the freeview aerial are scrambled using the aldi set up. Using the astra 2 satellite any suggestions

You can't buy any new 12v Sky boxes, they don't make them any more, but on eBay you can still fairly easily get a Pace Javelin 12v Sky box. They work pretty well either with or without a Sky card although of course they don't do HD or Sky+, and they have only one SCART output . Their other big plus is that they use a LOT less power than the 240v boxes.

My Aldi kit included a Ross 12V HD satellite tuner. For £50 for the whole kit, cheaper than a freesat tuner from Currys!

HDMI & Scart output, plus USB to plug in disk or stick and use it as a recorder.

ETA: Whilst there are a lot more channels than Freeview, you wouldn't necessarily want to bother with them...
