An 80 foot mast under a 65 foot bridge

Brilliant - I've never seen that done before.

He could have just taken the masts down of course, but his idea was probably less work - and definitely more adventurous!

A friend of mine on a twin masted junk rigged sailing boat in the marina in Calais wanted to take his masts down so he could get onto the canal, but the crane driver said they were too heavy. They were basically tapered wooden telegraph poles which went through the cabin and were bolted into the hull. My friend managed to persuade the crane driver to take the weight of each mast as he sawed through them a few feet above the cabin top! Now he has a couple of stumps sticking out of the cabin!

The crane driver, marina manager and a bunch of French boaters looked on in amazement at the antics of this mad English eccentric. They'd never seen anything like it before.
