Most Beautiful Canal in the UK

I saw a picture sometime, can't remember where, but there was a canal with hills on either side... anyone know which one?

It occured to me that there are some very beautiful canals with some equally outstanding waterways so I wonder which ones are the most scenic and isolated and gorgeously knee bendingly beautifully wonderful?

hmmmm.... which has the fewest locks?! It occurs to me that the canal may not travel through the valley and may rise and fall with the hills...

Oh dear. I feel faint!

The Ashby doesn't have many locks! :D But that's mainly in flat land, so not much help, really. Sorry. Coat?

The Thames and Severn Canal - the section between Chalford and Daneway, known as the Golden Valley.

If it ever gets restored, that is.

dont know if it is that section but the leeds and liverpool as a whole takes some beating.

gone to skipton and was blessed to pass through the hills and watch as the snow covered the tops and not a flake fell on the boat , watched snow falling on my left and blinding sunshine on the right hailstones falling at the back , you cant help but sing.

the liecster section of gu goes round the hills and gives a view for miles on a good day if that helps

Particularly the section between the new A14 road bridge and the junction with the Welford Arm :D

I don't want a view for miles! I was hoping the hills were nearby :)

Enchanting! :D

Hmm... Has anyone got any pictures? I wish I knew where I saw the picture I saw..... What about good and appauling hire companies along those stretches? I don't think I will take my boat - it will take all year to get there!

oooh I THINK it might be the huddersfield narrow.... :D But I THINK i meant mountains not hills.....

Any further clues Mort..

You haven't given us much to go on, wide or narrow canal, dry stone walls or hedges, trees or no trees, cattle or sheep, marauding drunks on the towpath?

Does anyone know whether the Rochdale is worth a visit - I gather one gets a police escort.... :D If that is pretty, and I can hire a boat, it might be a deliciously wonderful trip.

I think it was a narrow canal, and all I remember is a boat in water with hills rising up either side. It was frightfully picturesque, and it reminded me of the bit past glenfinnin (golly, spelling really is awry) and past ben nevis... but in england....

Surely that doesn't sound like ALL the canals! Dry stone walling is probably a good start, and the hills were like mountains. Rather like that stretch through castleton behind the caves...

The Aylesbury Arm as you descend from the staircase lock all the way to around Lock 12 has to be one of the most beautiful canals in the UK in my opinion. Stunning views, very peaceful and well worth a visit. Always a warm welcome in the basin from the Aylesbury Canal Society as well.

Have a look at this site, virtual cruises along all the canals I mentioned plus many others. Try the HNC and L&L first. http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/

Sounds like the Huddersfield Narrow Canal - mountains either side. You can see lots of pictures on flickr.com under search terms "Huddersfield Canal".

The Rochdale Canal has steeper and higher mountain sides but is broad beam. From Littleborough to Hebden Bridge the scenery is probably the most dramatic anywhere in the English canals. Again lot of pictures available on flickr.com

You can hire from Shire Cruisers to see the Huddersfield or the Rochdale.

Sounds like the summit level of the Rochdale to me, yes it is well worth a visit but no you neither need nor are you given a police escort.. There is more than the usual attention given to you, largely because of the need to monitor and control water usage.

Shire Cruisers at Sowerby Bridge is the most convenient hirer.. www.shirecruisers.co.uk

The locks on the Rochdale are works of art in themselves - constructed from huge blocks of stone. I hired from Shire Cruisers in 2006 - they receive my wholehearted recommendation. But you do have to like locks to do the Rochdale. I love 'em, so the Rochdale is one of my 2 favorite canals (the other is the Peak Forest).

Oh dear... I don't think I like locks AT ALL... I might have to make friends with people that do! I will look up the peak forest... the very fact it has 'peaks' in the title suggests it might be gorgeous too...

The Peak Forest has excellent mountain scenery in the southern half and all the locks are in one short section in the middle. It sits up quite high on one side of the valley rather than down in the bottom, so the views are very pretty. It's not very long though! You can do it all in 1 day.
