Float and Storage mode - Victron charger

Featured Posts

The batteries on our boat have a recommended float voltage of 13.6 to 13.8. The victron multiplus has a feature called storage volatge which is fixed at 13.2v, as far as I can work out it can't be changed. But it can be switched off.

We are rarely on mains but occaisionally, like now, pop into a marina for a few days. Is it better to switch off the storage mode and leave it in float or leave well alone?

TIA,

Paul.

If you are only on mains occassionally then it really doesn't matter.. Its intended to reduce stress on batteries that are left on float long term so it really doesn't matter in your case. You could turn it off, playing with the Victron settings on a mobile phone works very well and is almost fun if you like that sort of thing, but otherwise just don't bother.

Yes for long term ie weeks, months etc it is better to use a voltage of around 13.2v which keeps the batteries nearly fully charged but minimises “positive plate corrosion” which can shorten the life of a battery left on charge for long periods. In your case, float at 13.8 would be a better option since you are only there for a few days.
