After years of good service, now intermittantly when I press the "on" button on the generator control panel it does not turn on /energise/light up the 'on' light so I cannot start it.

There is a fully charged starter battery.

 

Any clues what I should check.

You could try unscrewing the panel then take the wires off the "on" button and joining them together in case the switch has failed.

Check that the fuse/breaker is OK and that the panel is getting power.

The buttons are momentary switches. The switch itself is the first thing to check. A replacement can be soldered in if that's where the fault lies.

I read the topic title as Fisher-Price generator. It would be made out of brightly coloured plastic, but totally reliable and impossible to break. 😀
