Lister ST3C Service

Hi all

 

I'm about to do a service on my Lister ST3C and would like all the help I can get with regards to oils etc.

I've looked online but there does seem to be a difference of opinion as to what I should be using!

Does anyone know of anywhere that specialises in Listers or does anyone have one of these engines and can advise me on what they have found to be suitable?

As well as the oil change I'm looking to replace the oil filter and possibly the fuel filter (assuming they have one).

The actual fuel line itself is nothing more than a length of copper pipe which I would like to upgrade to a more modern flexi if anyone has any ideas.

Filters normally used on those engines are.   Oil-  Fram PH2834, Crosland 547.   Fuel- Fram C11931 PL or Crosland 489.  Your engine should be solid mounted, you don't need to complicate things with a flexible fuel pipe, just a coil in the tubing before the lift pump to check vibration.  These days any good 15/40 CC CF mineral engine oil. Used to be straight 30 sae oils, but the more modern 15/40 is better in my opinion.

Should be the same.  Although folk do sometimes fit different fuel filter units, the one attached on the engine itself, quite a small unit, elements for it should only be about £4 or so.  Filters can be bought online from either Filterama, or Inline Filters which have good cross referance charts. Later engine than the SR so 15/40 oil even better.

Thanks for the info.

So you suggest I just replace the copper fuel pipe new for old? The old one has been trodden on a few times so a little flat in places! This would be restricting the fuel supply I assume?

Yes, but double coil the tubing just before the lift pump. The old trodden on one should have it. Make sure you use annealed copper tubing or you might split it coiling it.

Wrap the tubing around, say a log of wood a couple of times, about 6'' diameter. Do it once though, any over manipulating of the tubing will work harden it and will need heating to re. anneal-soften it again.

Is likely to be ex industrial if it has an oil filter.  My ST2 has one.     Is there a spin on oil filter fitted to your engine. Would be on the port side near the fuel lift pump.

Also, do they have a gear box oil?

Vibration damping, helps to prevent the tube from ever splitting.  they do have gearbox oil. Gear oil, sae 80/90 in either the Lister LM100 mechanical box or in the Hydraulic 150 box, same oil in the reduction box if you have one.

Most likely a Lister box so as above but if its not a Lister box the oil could be anything. If you cant confirm its a Lister box post a photo

Yes indeed , I forgot that Tony, many of the ST's were fitted Hurth boxes after Lister stopped making the Lister boxes.

Okay, that make sense.

She;s not been started in a while so are there any other tips you can put my way? previously she was quite a smoke free engine unless put in reverse for idling while moored up.and then she threw a bit of black smoke out.

I've given her a new exhaust system (pipe work & silencer) as the previous one had as many holes a tea strainer!!

I'll post some photos this afternoon for you to take a look at.

 

Lastly, a big thank you to all who have replied even if it was from an empty pilchard tin!!

I have even been asked about a Lister with what looked like a remote shaft driven machinery gearbox so once boats get on a bit its hard to know exactly what has been used.

Are you on a river? CaRT won't like you running in gear when moored up. You should not be battery charging on idle for the first few hours. Its a direct injected engine and direct injected engines tend not to have the cleanest combustion at idle and low speed.

I have a permanent mooring on the GUC. I only used to run for charging battery but as I'm restoring her I'll be adding solar so the running for charge will be a thing of the past.

She is a very basic boat so there will be no big demands on the electrics. Laptop and phone charge, extractor fan and shower pump, lights and maybe a 12v TV. I have a 300w panel waiting to go on and a good controller from Bimble Solar which should look after the starter battery and one leisure battery.

I have no idea what that gearbox is, it looks very like the one I saw remote from a similar engine that I took to be a machinery gearbox of a lathe or some-such.  I await with great interest to hear from others.

 

I am sure its a mechanical gearbox with that stout leaver on the side.

Any one of a variety. Unless someone recognises the gearbox then I fear we will have no idea what oil should be used. We know there are four different ones - Lister LH150. Lister L100, Hurth, PRM. yours is none of these.

 

You asked abut the correct oil for the gearbox. If the oil is fairly thin and redish its probably ATF/Dexron. If its like clean engine oil and of similar runnienes then its probably engine oil. If the colour is like clean engine oil but is far less runny then its probably EP 80 gear oil.

Of course, yes I see your point now, I did ask about gear box oil.

I'm trawling through some Lister sites and yeah I see the gearboxes that you mention.

Like you said hopefully someone will recognise the box so I can then find out what oil is suitable but I will make a note of what you have said and try and get a look tomorrow and report back with my findings.

The fuel filter is different from the norm so my numbers will be wrong, could be a 296 see if there's any numbers on it.  The oil filter looks ok so my numbers should be ok, but read numbers on it, looks lik a Mahl something or other.  No idea what gearbox that is either.
