Soho Loop BCN

About 1973, the little 17ft plywood cruiser I owned at the time was completely stopped by all the floating reeds on (what we always the knew of as) the Winson Green Loop. The tiny outboard motor my mother has acquired from a colleague was really only suitable for a dinghy and struggled to push the boat along at any speed in clear water, let alone the lesser-navigated sections of the BCN.

spacer.pngWe had picked up a fencepost and associated fence on the prop, and of couse there was no weedhatch. As a ex-workingboat being used as a camping-hireboat, it was trimmed with minimum ballast, and this picture from earlier in the trip shows the counter was normally out of the water. There was a bit of a ledge on this bit of canal: some rocking-and pulling with ropes gave the angle, being  partly-grounded on the outside of the bend, and Elaine recalls carrying some of the engineroom ballast to the front of the boat. After a while, some of the crew set off to find more ballast (beer). The fence came off eventually ...

Thanks - interesting. A year or so earlier than that and another family shared a hire boat and coming down Wolverhampton 21, we picked up a bundle of barbed wire. In those days, even hire boats did not have a weed hatch. However, shortly before that I had been instructed by Jack Monk on how to clear the prop which involved a very careful cilling, which we followed - thankfully without an upset. I think that we at least had something that would cut single wires.

It gives me the shakes  to look back at some of the common practices from those days!

It was the Black Country New Road, otherwise known as the Black Country Spine Road, which severed the Wednesbury Old Canal and cut off the Ridgeacre Branch.

The Birmingham Northern Relief Road is the route now known as the M6 Toll.
