The swinging barrier was new, and with the moored boats, precluded the winding of any seventyfoot visiting boats. It was bolted to the bridge, and a spanner was doing quite well at moving it, if very slowly. A helpful BW person from the workshop walked around to open the padlock for us, which saved a lot of sixth-turns with that spanner ...

Today 2018. Lift bridge on Nivernais canal. These were hand wind ups until 2 years before and I got ready to get ashore when it started to move. A kind person walking along operated the control which amazingly they had put on both sides of the canal.
