Simple answer is yes in the carbon bushes  have evolved over time and now you can buy a modern ceramic bearing which is totally different.

Hmm. I got my replacement water pump from Gardner's shortly

before they closed down. So I assume it may have a ceramic  bearing,. But how would I know for sure?

If your has a greasers or grease nipple it is an earlier type and needs greasing, if its a later type with a carbon ceramic seal it will not have a grease point. If a later seal is retrofitted to a earlier pump housing the grease point is normally blanked off.

It has a grease cup that apparently only needs a slight turn once in a blue moon!
