It is designed as a draught diverter so that the wind outside neither blows the flame out nor creates excessive flue "pull". The heat causes natural convection to the outside, taking the products of combustion away.

This is why it is vital that the outside flue terminal is not crushed or obstructed.:sick:

 

Have said all that, loads of Electrolux 3 way fridges were installed without the flue being connected at all.  Of course, that fridge was never designed or approved for boat use anyway...............:banghead:

And are banned from use in boat for hire, rental boats, commercial boats etc etc on Inland waterways that require a BSSC.
