If you use Wifi Hotspots without a VPN you may want to take note that session hijacking has just got easy with a recently released Firefox extension called Firesheep. This util makes it easy for anyone to use your Facebook account as well as other major sites (mostly social ones) when your using a WiFi hotspot. Best way to protect yourself is too use a VPN. Another way but not as brilliant solution is when using Facebook/Twitter is not to go http://facebook.com but https://facebook.com note the https, this will then keep you on the secure site and not just the secure bit when logging in to the site.

I have noticed that more and more pubs along the canals now offer Wifi. I am currently moored at the Willeymoor Lock Tavern on the Llangollen and they offer free Wifi to people using the pub. I have had this at a few pubs now was thinking it would be good if we could list these somewhere. I for one prefer to go to a pub offering Wifi when stopping, hopefully the beer and food will be ok aswell.

Hi All - I'm looking for some advice on bridging networks and using a 3 phone with wifi hotspot as the external gateway... First of all I'll explain the situation - we have a 3 phone (on the One Plan) acting as a wifi hotspot for our various devices (laptops, ipads, phones on networks that can't hit 3g when on the boat etc). There seems to be a limit of 5 concurrent connections, which sounds like plenty but when the 3 kids are here using phones and watching iplayer on laptops then those 5 connections go quickly. I also have 3 devices that do not have wifi and need to be networked - a PC, a RAID5 NAS (also acts as media server) and a printer. These are not on board yet but will soon be, I have several small switches I could use to network them, or my old ADSL router (but obviously without the ADSL) - when we lived in the house these devices all connected in this way. What I want to achieve is all the devices (wired and wifi) to talk to each other, so they will need to be on the same LAN/wLAN - then for that LAN/wLAN to use the 3 phone as a gateway. What device would I need to buy to achieve this? Is there some kind of wireless bridge that can link up all the devices (with built in DHCP) via wifi and built in LAN ports then route internet traffic via the hotspot? I could probably use a laptop to do the job but would rather not if possible. Many thanks in advance EDIT: This device in the US seems to be exactly what I need but not available in the UK - does anyone know of a similar device in the UK? http://www.zoomtel.com/products/4504.html

Hi fellow boaters. Happy New Year. A friend of ours got in touch with us (not by email), regarding a marina at Barton-under-Needwood ('the place to be'), regarding lack of internet access. some days a total lack!! We were concerned as we emailed our friends at this marina and after several days had no reply, which is unusual for them! Apparently some of the boat owners had complained about the state of play regarding internet access. It seems. aledgedly at this marina, although its free they have some sort of limiting usage device which they seem to switch on and off as when they deem necessary and apparently staff have been telling boaters that there are problems with it (more like penny pinching). Thought I would mention this, I know its free and should be grateful when it is working, but if you are not made aware of this when moving on to these marinas its not very nice when trying to get in touch with business associates and more importantly friends and family at this time of year when some one decided to switch it off for long periods of time. So my point being, if you are moving to a marina which offers wifi, free or otherwise, check there are no restrictions to it. Once again Happy New Year to all of you. Keep smiling!

Is there any easy solution to making a dongle broadcast on a wifi signal? My google search kicked up lots of stuff thats not quite relevant, if anyone else has a solution / tried and tested product would love to hear it.

The marina I am in has just gone live with its Wifi service, it is using a insecure system provided by a company called Park Wifi so there is no security like wep encryption like you would use on a home internet connection. You have to log on with a user name and password to use the system but I am a little concerned re the ''insecure'' part of the set up. I am asuming that the set up we have here is similar to what you would get in wifi hotspots in hotels and airports etc. I am new to hot spots etc and have been connecting to the net via my usb dongle from 3. Does anyone have any experience in improving the security when you use this type of internet connection, I use the internet for banking and shopping on line so I am reluctant to use an insecure system for this. I have tried to research a thing called VPN but it lost me quite quiclkly, at present I use a free anti virus software called Avira, is it a case of buying a decent Internet security software such as Kaspersky or similar to allow one to use these hotspots safely ?????? any advice would be appreciated thanks

Met the folks from Zead at the BCBF at the weekend, seemed to be offering a good product and seemed to know what they were talking about. Our internet at moorings is patchy at best so was very interested. Anyone any experience of these folks, or have better options Ta Dibbo

When we plan our next trip, i need to confirm there will be internet access for at least a couple of days a week. Can anyone help with this ? i will be somewhere either side of Skipton, and will of course only be on foot, so somewhere close to canal side. Dont care if there is a fee. Many thanks .Derek

We're off for a couple of weeks on Saturday starting at Shardlow, going along the T&M, Cov and Ashby then return. Sadly I need to log on to w*rk email every few days (I know, I know, but the pain of not doing it will be worse than the pain of doing it) so I'm trying to list wifi access points in advance. I've used the canal and riverside pub guide http://www.canalandriversidepubs.co.uk/pubs.html I have the Navigation in Shardlow, some in Barton under Needwood, the Willam IV in Alrewas, The plough at Huddlesford and Macdonalds. I see Mercia Marina has wifi but not sure if visitors have access, I'll have to call them. Is there anywhere obvious I'm missing please? Thanks Graham PS just noticed, a century of posts:-))

Hi all, firstly let me state that I have searched for this topic and have not found quite what I'm looking for (or perhaps I missed it). So firstly a few facts: 1. I would like to be able to access the internet on occasion when cruising, using appropriate Wi Fi hot spots. 2. My present ISP is AOL and, out of convenience, would prefer not to have to change but............ So my question(s) is this: What hardware do I need to purchase? As AOL do not support WiFi hotspots - what software will I require? If I need to change ISP who should I consider. Finally, I have been reading the threads on the use of mobile phones etc for internet access, but I don't need that level of connectivity - I would be following the same sort of regime as Maffi (using libraries, marinas etc). Thanks in anticipation.

With the slow but sure spread of WiFi cells, the more ‘andy-andy may be interested in the DIY approach. http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html
