  1. Many thanks for your blessing on the way I conduct my life. I'm sure that I feel better for that. Mind you an apology for your unwarranted attack would make me feel even better.
  2. 2+2 does not equal 22. I am a ccer, I basically live in the countryside and visit "civilisation" for shopping and doctors. If a doctor says come back in a week I move and come back in a week. I do indeed plan my trips taking into consideration doctors surgeries that are near the canal as I can only walk about 2 miles in one go. I cannot cycle as I don't have a bike, and the middle of the countryside is not always littered with stations, bus stops or taxi ranks as you would find out if you ever do any cruising.
  3. I wouldn't mind betting that no one ever purchased a home mooring for that purpose.
  4. Nice to know your in such good health. I often have to return to the same place for things like blood test results, or even just to get suitable doctors appointments.
  5. Seems to me that the boater in question needs some serious help with his defense. Then we can find out who was right and who was wrong. It's called justice.

  11. Yep, one of the very few locks that I ever got stuck in, luckily for just a few seconds as the boat was moving and freed itself. No fenders down needed to hang up in that lock.
  12. I wonder why we, as boaters, have to provide the BSS number to CaRT. Surely CaRT and BSS can exchange information. BSS is, I believe, owned by CaRT and EA. The BSS office is co-located with CaRT. Even if their computers can't/won't talk to each other then handing over a USB stick should be easy enough. 30,000+ communications every 4 years could be saved on what is pure routine transactions. My BSS ran out this year, according to CaRT, actually I renewed it a year early so it has a further 3 years to run. CaRT notified me and asked me to inform them of the new number. I will put it on my licence renewal. I'm just waiting to see if the data logger input feeds through and some friendly banksman or computer tries to tell me that I have no BSS.
  13. There most certainly is. Fertan converts the rust but does nothing for any bare clean metal. Vactan converts rust and puts a polymer coating over everywhere it has been used. I find it best to use Fertan on old, deep rust as you can irrigate it into the rust with water. Vactan is better on surface rust. Once treated with Vactan, the polymer coating tends to prevent rust forming where it has been use for weeks or months. Fertan offers less in the way of protection and needs to be primered much quicker.
  14. Having a raised dinette has more advantages than a better view outside, your feet keep warmer in winter as the cold air is at floor level.
  15. There are many times I would also advise against putting two boats in together. When there is a bridge arch or bush hindering one of the boats, and certainly if the lock gates don't open fully. But surely that's just common sense. Is it dangerous? In my opinion no, either steerer can just reverse if they cannot complete the manoeuvre, just like any other lock entrance. The vast majority of the time it works fine and it is easier on the boats and the crew. Certainly never heard of injury or damage to boats when doing this.
  16. What's dangerous about it?
  17. No need to tie them together, each steerer steers his own side and both boats enter the lock together. Saves a lot of faff with ropes and is very much quicker.
  18. I learnt it as a butane back splice as that is what it replaces.
  19. I really have no objection to you (collectively) blocking Braunston. It was given out, in good time, as a stoppage so those not interested could give it a wide berth. As regards visiting by car, well I don't have one of those being a CC'er. A bus pass is about as close as I get. Having no interest in historic boats, is not uncommon, nor is it an affliction, amongst boaters. We run around in our welded boats, avoid rallies, and generally go for the peace and quiet life meeting up with friends who share our life style. I do sincerely mean it when I say that I hope you all have a good time as I think that everyone should be allowed to choose what boat they have and indulge in that choice.
  20. Thanks for the offer, however I will be many miles away, and doubt that I could moor within walking distance even if I got there. Passing interest is not really a possibility with current organisation of this event. As to authentic boatwomen, the one I'm married to suits me just fine, There is nothing to really attract me to such an event, otherwise I would obviously go there. I sincerely hope that the people who are interested in such boats have a great time there and don't get too introspective about their boats rivets.
  21. Dunno, I heard that some boaters are forming a blockade and obstructing the canal, probably to show Nick Brown how it's really done. I also understand that most of the boats will be generic copies of Triggers broom having had almost total replacement therapy over the years.
  22. I'm not advocating Rolls, or any other battery. It's just that when I compared what was on the market they came out as the "best" for me. One of the big factors in the comparison is that they had to fit in the same space or it was going to be a lot of grinding and welding work to be done. The cost of re-shaping the battery storage space can add a lot to the cost while not increasing the battery longevity or capacity one iota. Mostly, decent batteries come down to lead content, so weight per amp is a useful guide for the larger format batteries. As a long term live aboard my main concern is life cycle cost rather than purchase cost and the top end of the purchase price market seems to do better in that respect. I'm personally not sure that Trojans are of similar quality to Rolls. I've never seen any comparison featuring these makes (or any others such as Hawker) let alone a direct comparison of similar battery types and capacities. If anyone has any such comparison could they post it, or a link to it please. I have known a few of Trojan users and have compared notes but these situations are too individual to make real comparisons.
  23. Don't limit yourself to the make Trojan. There are more deep cycle batteries out there. I have Rolls batteries and the current set are starting their eighth year of full time liveaboard abuse. This forum seems bound up to leisure batteries or Trojans while there are other suitable batteries out in the market that may well be better for your purpose.
  24. If the questions get changed it is not a rolling survey.
