Not quite wide vs narrow but it would not surprise me if CRT didn't hand over some canals to private companies who would then charge a toll for the use of that canal. CRT would still get its income but divest itself of maintaining that waterway. The private canal Co. could then charge for wide or narrow boats. Depends on the width of the canal of course. ETA. a little like the M6 toll. The toll road owners get their fee and the government still gets the road tax. A portion of road tax is not refundable because you use the toll road and therefore are not using the public highway. Not sure if the M6 toll is run at a profit or loss. 2013 article: M6 Toll: Is it a complete failure? - BBC News Also: M6 Toll is sold to investment group IFM - BBC News

A rouse which fraudsters have used in the past is to lift photographs off a legitimate boat sales web site and copy them to an online auction site. The boat is then advertised at ridiculously low price, either on a trailer or some obscure part of the country with buyer collect. You pay up, money disappears and there is of course no boat. As others have suggested, have nothing to do with this. At least with a reputable broker you have some fall back.

"You are talking to me as if you are talking to someone who cares." Not said to me but to a college at a team meeting, by a manager, when he raised an objection. "You are failing to keep up with today's economic climate, it is about time you brought yourself up to speed and I suggest you sit down now." Said to me at a seminar when I said a planned procedure wouldn't work and gave good evidence why. I suppose it was the same in other big companies but one had to be astute at playing the political game. -

heli·cop·ter view [helicopter view] NOUN INFORMAL (Especially in business) a general survey of something; an overview. When I worked for BT we had a level 2 manager who was full of Americanisms, most of them were avoidance tactics by him. e.g. "No such thing as problems, it is a window of opportunity for you to sort out, not bother me with!" "You are failing to see the big picture." -

Could be a window of opportunity for someone to push the envelope? -

Perhaps to get a mod the selection committee should go for the low hanging fruit as no one seems to be forthcoming? Or perhaps take a helicopter view of the candidates? -

Interesting, I got this windlass off someone in Canada via eBay. I would think they had a hire boat and purchased the windlass from Rose Narrow Boats. Rose did sell these at one time.

The Oxford also had a stop at Braunston by the toll office which was removed when the canal there was widened by the Grand Union in 1933 Photo's from CRT Archive. https://collections.canalrivertrust.org.uk/results

Thank you all for the reply’s. I have also been pm’d with the boat registration number. It has several name changes since “Tarnhelm.”

When Mike H was lock keeper at Sutton's he was given a "Thank you" card from Anne ?? (name I cannot decipher) of NB "Tarnhelm?" in May 1990. I have checked with Canal Plan and there is no boat of that name registered. Anyone have any information on the boat or the then owners please?

The car was driven over the bridge across the junction. It is just wide enough. I would hazard a guess in the 1950's, don't know for sure. The cottage on the right was the lock keeper's house. Mike H lived there before he retired. A couple more photo's, 1st photo from CRT Archive Whitsun 1956. 2nd, CRT Archive. The white house was demolished a long time ago. Back on topic. This picture is from Getty Archive, it is the narrows on the Coventry Canal with the toll House back LHS. Was this narrows ever a stop lock or gauging point? I can see no evidence of it being a stop lock Perhaps a gauging point when the junction of the Coventry and Oxford Canals was at Longford?

There is also the remains of one under the "old" Northampton to Daventry Rd. Bridge No 24 at Weedon. Second picture from NarrowBoat Magazine.

Some folks are getting greedy, it will only fit the Ham Baker gear. Windlass for Hatton Lock Flight - Aluminium Canal Boat Lock Gate Key Lock Handle | eBay I have one but didn't pay anything like that for it.

The junction of the Moira cut and the Coventry Canal being an example. Sadly, cottage and gates long gone. Photo from CRT Archive. MB Rocket with the Barrett Family in charge.

Heard at Braunston bottom lock a while ago now: - Wife: "He can take the b****y boat in himself, I wouldn't want to scratch his precious paint work!"
