  2. The Stratford upon Avon River Festival will take place on 2nd and 3rd July 2011 on the River Avon in Stratford, featuring live music with a range of interesting stalls, market traders and delicious food and drink outlets. To enable boaters to visit the event and the Evesham Festival the following weekend, there are concessionary River Avon Licences available. (http://www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk/application-forms) Full details are available on the River Festival website (www.stratfordriverfestival.co.uk) where can also be found the application to join the Festival Newsletter, and links to finding us on Facebook and following us on Twitter If you need any more details, please e-mail the Festival Team at info@stratforward.co.uk or telephone 0871 7813 538
  3. Good choice of where to go and should not find it that busy once you get off the Tring summit Pubs a plenty (link to guide below and any feedback so the guiide keeps up to adte welcome) and remember at Berkhamsted there is a Waitrose right next to the cut for general goodies and treats !
  4. Don't think you will ever see them advertised as the 'grapevine' works very well in this area When a new marina opens, there is often a press release saying x berths of which x are for residential boats You could always become a liveaboard and many narinas allow this status
  5. You could always scan the original licence and stick this to the outside of the boat ?
  6. Lets think about what a computer will see if credit checks are being made If it can see an address that it recognises, then it will most probably pass If it gets a reject because a c/o is in the address, then a fail or manual intervention may happen Remember. that items are delivered to an address not a name
  7. As one of the leading mail forwarders and from a long career in the mail industry, there is little implication for the owner of an address to having other peoples mail being sent to their address. Many individuals do not have a permanent street address and use either friends/family/a service provider to receive their mail and, more importantly, allow items such as car insurance, credit cards and government documentation to use the address and be delivered there. The usual deciding factor to whether you are actually living there is inclusion on the electoral role. You may find that certain credit checks associate the address you are giving against this
  8. I've though about underfloor heating in a boat with either water heated by the stove and pumped or by electric heating for use when tied up in the winter at a marina Anyone had any experience of this and advantages over skirting board heating ?
  9. The Dunton are very light and will open nearly everything around the system (so no need to carry more than one windlass) The Dunton Double plus has a longer throw so making it easire to move heavy paddles or could be described as a 'ladys' windlass

  11. Went over the Oxford at Banbury earlier today and the GU at the bottom of Hatton and both were frozen !!! No breaking of ice evident at either location
  12. Phil Having lived 'on the bank', life is easy when it comes to identifying yourself as you will have a UK street address and bills to prove that you exist in society If you become a liveaboard on non residential moorings, this all goes so you will need to arrange to either have a relative/friend to take in your post and you pick it up or they send it to a Post Office c/o Poste Restante There are 3 companies that provide this service on the waterways (boatmail.co.uk, ship to shore and waterways mail) and some will provise a street address and have varying charging structures If you have any more questions about mail, I have many years experience in the mail industry and will be happy to answer any query that you (or the readers) have
  13. Try looking in the local farm shop as they sometimes have paint at reasonable prices I'm sure there are some advertisers of cheap paint in Waterways World
  14. Make a large batch of stew (steak and veg) and cook slowly on the top of the fire/range. If it is too hot, each a trivet to get the temp lower
  15. Hockley Heath is usually difficult to get a signal as the canal is in a cutting through the village Top of Lapworth should be OK as the transmitters are on top of the water tower on the hill None of the pubs in the HH area have Wifi
  16. I had my Jan edition on Monday Suspect if you live in a 'snowy' area, they may have been delayed
  17. The pub on the cut (The Wharf) normally has a selection of real ales but can be described as 'Gastro' rather than Weatherspoons There are two others in the village (The Bakers Arms and The Five Bells) but last time I looked only the The Five Bells does food

  19. I would measure the temperature of your stove and then buy the appropriate fan with the relevant temp range My Bubble diesel fired stove ticks along nicely at 60 so I use the gas Ecofan to circulate the air
  20. Try http://www.canalshop.co.uk/acatalog/tillerpins.html and they send everything out 1st class, hold good stocks and will get them to you by Xmas (unless the postie is snowed in as well)
  21. Anything you put under the slabs could be liable to move when you 'bang' into something THink about spraying/painting the bilge with a good quality bitumastis, then laying roofing felt on it and then putting the slabs on top - a bit belt and braces but it depends how long you are thinking of keeping the boat

  23. I've owned and used a Bubble stove for many years and have always lit it with a match When I want to lit it, I turn the diesel on at the fie, then the tap near to the stove and then inthe engine room to turn the tap on of the header tank By the time I have taken the elements out of the stove, the diesel has started to spread across the bottom of the pot and is easy to light. It is easier to get to stay a light with some carbon from the last burning. The supply of diesel is then turned down to just above minimum and with areasonable amount of diesel in the stove, it burns well at the start and then settles down. This method means I can light the fire when first arriving at the boat so then go to unloading the car etc. The fire also has an Ecofan on the top which helps to move air around the boat
  24. If you have space, put a plastic boix behid the coal box to keep all the things like windlasses you need etc relatively to hand but out of sight Also, chimneys can be stored sitting in a planrt pot dish so the crud does not fall ove the floor tucked behind coats etc so they don't fall over
  25. Sounds like you need a Gardner - fit and forget, low fuel consumption, little vibration - what more could a boat ask for ?
