  1. There are multiple "data collectors" (aka "Towpath Rangers").. I believe that someone is recording boats in Berkhamsted on a daily, or at least near daily basis.
  2. Whilst not disagreeing with you, it is probably better than a typical powered BW work flat, and they don't seem to rub through on the largely unprotected "pointed" corners. Still seems to have been built by someone pretty clueless and/or someone with limited fabrication skills though!
  3. Excellent idea, although if I play the melodeon the number of bum notes would be guaranteed to be far higher!
  4. There are of course many of us that do not have a TV, a radio, or a music player on our boats. I did not realise it was my responsibility to drown out other people's noisy devices!

  6. One of the issues with Ebers seems to be that they are often far, far louder to those outside a boat than they are to those inside said boat. There may not be any rule about when they are run, but many are pretty obnoxious to those moored close by, IMO, and it seems to me that many Eber owners have little idea about the potential impact of them. Mind you the number of generator owners that also believe theirs to be "near silent" only a short distance away is also pretty stunning!

  8. I can't add anything, other than it has the same directors as Elton Moss Boatbuilders, who I know have been around for a while, but I know nothing of the current status of.
  9. That is the first time anybody has been unduly unkind about the boat being advertised!
  10. To be completely, clear what is the exact name of the company you are dealing with, please? I can't immediately find a current firm called Northwich Boat Builders (or Northwich Boatbuilders), only the Northwich Boat Company. Is it that one, or another one with Nprthwich as part of the company name?
  11. I feel duly chastised!
  12. Ah - if this is what you are referring to when you talked about Alf's can, then I have slightly misunderstood, I think.... Normally when talking about a boat families can's, they reger to one one these...... These are items that would traditionally have been on the roof of a working boat, which is why I said it would be good to see such items finding a home where that was still the case. I don't believe a can of the type in your picture has the same provenance as something that would have been on the boats, and it is likely it has been painted just as a decorative item. It will sadly not attract the same level of interest, although any item painted by a former boatman would no doubt have a value to somebody.
  13. Which 1967 booklet is this, please David? I am not familiar with it, (but obviously interested!). In think that unless Flamingo carried a bulk in Willow Wren service mote than once, it is unlikely this picture was that early - the evidence seems to be it was very much towards the end of Willow Wren CTS days, probably when Ron Withey worked it.. One mystery though, is that in other pictures I have seen when it has a bulk, it is paired with a Star class butty, (probably Cygnus?). If the boat behind Flamingo in the picture I have posted above is its own butty, then it is a Town class, not a Star, and I have no idea which one.
  14. Our Flamingo has certainly carried one in the past: (Taken from Narrow Boats, by Tom Chaplain, but cannot find a photographer to credit). Although you could argue that any elaborate external decoration to any narrow boat is seen far more.(at least to any great advantage), by people not on the boat, than those actually one it!
  15. Can you be specific about types? Many people would say (I think) that the style of window typically fitted to many narrow-boats is already "caravan style", so what exactly are you looking to change from and to, please?
  16. Surely this is what very large numbers of CC-ers routinely have?
  17. Someone who collects is one thing, but on the whole then many people don't get to see them, (and yes I'm aware that some forum members do offer a guided tour of their collection, but it is hardly the norm, and generally a "collectors" can will not be seen by many.) If it is a nice one, try and sell it to somebody that has an appropriate boat, so it will actually be seen by large numbers of people in it's correct setting. Far better even than in most museums, in my view, but probably a view that not everybody will agree with.
  18. Read my post you quoted! Somebody who just wants to start their engine up, and set of straight away, without frigging about with blow-lamps, small explosive charges, or introducing petrol on to a boat that doesn't otherwise require it. I'll concede you semi-diesel, (or even Kelvin), guys can usually get under way faster from a cold start up than President, Adamant or Laplander, but even so........
  19. One has to wonder is the generous 2 metres headroom claimed only applies if you have your head in the raised bit! One also has to wonder (amongst a million other things!), if they just ran out of metal for the grab rails before they got as far as the front of the boat. I also can't see where the neceaasry square metres of splar panel are going to end up.
  20. Image from previous thread. Love the "Panoramic Double Glazed Windows". This advert surely has to be some kind of quirky joke???
  21. Mike, Do you still have that rather nice 2-cylinder "H" series Lister that you picked up at a bargain price? Simple answer is to bung that in instead of the Skandia - it will start effortlessly from cold, and you'll be up and running in seconds without any of the faff! ETA: It will also always start rotating in the correct direction!
  22. I can't get my brain around this! The picture doesn't look Photoshopped, but surely nobody of sane mind has actually built this Tardis boat. .
  23. Not correct, I think. The fuel duty on road diesel (DERV) is identical to that on Petrol. When you pay more for DERV it must be because the base price before any fuel duty or VAT has been set higher than for petrol.
  24. You definitely need to establish contact with Jeannette Smith Harrison, who posts on here, but is not exactly a regular any more. I worked with Joe Harrison when I did a Saturday job for a hire boat company in the early 1970s, and I know Jeannette is related to, but not directly descended from him. She has all the family history, including the many links to countless other surnames from families who worked the boats.
  25. Tongue in cheek, but a working boat represents potentially least possible number of customers for the pub for maximum amount of mooring space used up. Potentially 72 feet of moorings occupied by just 8 feet of living accommodation. I'm not suggesting that was their reasoning but you can't sell drinks or meals tro fifty plus feet of hold occupied by bagged coal, diesel and calor gas!
