  1. Some years ago, I visited the basin and saw this ironwork, the boat it belonged to is long gone, I wonder if it is still there?, It's worth having a look at the basin as I think a Building still remains and the chalk stream still flows strongly. It's a nice walk into the village (it's a large one) and near the clock tower look for the Heron Path, a pleasant walk along this past the old school buildings will link up with the stream, fences indicate it was adopted as a canal feeder collecting water from an area known as Wendover Springs. It has flowed strongly and steadily for 200 years as it drains a big area and does not suffer from too much water extraction. At the end of the path is a large pond, the sluice control iron work copies that found on the Grand Union. Well worth a visit.
  2. Good pictures, sorry to read of the problem, having a look at the scope of the rust I would check the electrical connections on the boat to see if there are any problems causing the widespread rust.
  3. Excellent video and replies, with some good photos (thanks), the Wendover gatherings were good and raised lots of money for restoration, but they were hard work, usually the weather was kind, but one year was a washout!, then the field was sold and no more events, one was held at Apsley but it was not the same...my boat is a 'dot' in a couple of the pics, will the canal reach Wendover? hope so. I think the first gathering was the mid eighties, when a group of D&DBC boaters reached Tringford one Easter. If you look carefully, the iron prow of a long lost boat is visible in the basin at Wendover, the railway 'twix Wendover station and Halton Camp carried coal. It is also worth reading 'Water from Wendover', which details the very constant flow of water from springs just outside the village, a walk up the Heron Path, starting near the clock tower along side this stream is good.
  4. I have a similar engine (2LW), I usually start it after turning it over a few times with the decompression lever open, it uses a thick grade of oil and this cold weather ...........also press the button for cold starts in the winter- that helps. I do cringe when I hear people rev any engine hard on starting. I did see a Gardner 6L2 with a small tray below the air filter which you could fill with meths to warm things for Cold Starting...... But Gardner 112695 always starts first touch of the button.
  5. How things have changed, I have not had a 'local' for years, but when I did we all used to have our own tankard at the pub, usually in the Landlord's hand as you walked in ready to be filled. Guess those days are gone forever.

    Speedwheel

Redshaw's do a nice brass unit, but the arrangement on my boat works well. with a brass speed wheel, a long metal rod and parts from a car jack - the sort which used a long screwed rod.......
  7. I thought it was rated at 28 HP...............
  8. Another vote for Oxon, did a good job on Albion Mills, it was some years ago and they may be busy now or Chris is doing his 'Roses & Castles', more recently they did a good job on a tug style called Cypress.Sounds as if you are close by and might be able to call in....

  10. Interesting comments, with regards to ammeters, I find the digital ones which plug into Lighter sockets useful, in cars and on the boat, any views on them?.
  11. Hi, Drip Feed oil burners - Kabola, Refleks have become the biggest ( I almost typed boring) problem after leaves in the cut, or my boat goes much slower after Oct 00,01 am, I have one, a Kabola OD4, they are good stoves. Fuel sitting in the pipes all summer, goes off, the small bore copper 'twix' carb and burner pipe gets blocked, I had all these problems with my 20 year old unit, and the burner pot developed a pin-prick hole. I took it home, re-built it, cost about £300.......now like new it lights first time, (took me 17 years to achieve this), burns perfectly. I have managed a low flame setting, for the unit and can get it to run without the pump..........the big problem with these units is one carb. seems to fit all - some units, like mine really only need setting 1 to 2.5, anything over that and the flame is too big. it boils...........have fun, until next year. Oh! and the units like to run constantly............ short term burns coke them up.
  12. Small world, I used to buy spares for my motorcycle from that store 1964/65, It was quite a big outlet, across Walton Street. Some of the canal buildings were taken up by Mick Riley who also dealt in Motor bikes.
  13. I thought you would like this. Another interesting point cropped up on UTUBE...I would have thought the Ship inn was built around the same time as the canal, but a local historian bought an old Will off Ebay, this dealt with the disposal of a persons estate, the will was dated 1737 and made specific mention of the Ship inn.
  14. I thought one section of this film might interest some members, it features Aylesbury in 1966. At 2.50 there is a small section showing the covered bay and storage building fronting Walton Street. I seem to recall a crane adjoining this building, but that has gone. In 1964 I used to spend lunchtimes eating rolls purchased from Jackson's bakery nearby, sitting by this warehouse and recall narrowboats being converted, I see there is a Dolphin cruiser for sale at £750. The film is interesting as a fair few of the redeveloped buildings in the town have had a short life of perhaps 20/25 years before being knocked down and the site re-developed for a second time . The warehouse was demolished and Kingfisher House replaced it, there is a a glut of offices in the town now and Kingfisher House was converted to flats. Shame the proposal to continue the canal to connect with the Thames at Dorchester was never implemented. https://youtu.be/GC3ANJ43Ado
  15. Thanks for the tips (I and M), will take into account, I found gas lockers on Tug decks produce some amazing ways of complying with BSS inspections (albeit for the short term), and the small bottles seemed the safest option. 13 Kg bottles are heavy too lift and re-filling seemed a tricky option.
  16. Hi, Looks as though I will have to modify storage arrangements on my boat which has a tug deck. The difference in height between small bottles and the 6Kg ones is 155mm. I will probably remove the locker lid, raise the upstands as necessary to accommodate the new bottles and refit the lid and hinges, Will involve a small amount of welding, but would not affect the lines on the tug deck too much....
  17. Thanks, do you recall how long ago?...........
  18. Thanks for all the input, I did wonder if it was somewhere down there, it would seem artistic licence has taken over, I see it is just off the A40, I might 'buzz' down for a look. Wonder if those 2 boats did end up there?. Once again, thanks.... Mike.
  19. Thanks, very useful.........explains his knowledge of boats....
  20. Thanks, Met you some years ago when yo ur boat was being blacked at Cowroast.............hope all well...
  21. I was given this print about 25 years ago and wonder if anyone knows where it is. Titled 'Tranquillity', it is by Alan Ingham, No.516/600, the butty in the foreground is named Serpens, not sure of the second one, the nb moored looks a conventional canal boat. I suspect the picture dates from about 1990......... If anyone has an photo of the scene I would be interested to see it. Thanks in advance.
  22. Lovely combination of boat size and engine. I have owned a 2LW in a 48ft boat 17 years now, more than happy with it. Most South African one were were restored by Walshes. you can tell by the air filter they used, a photo would help. Several useful websites, Engines can dated by numbers found on the block. Useful range of handbooks for the LW range available, as well as some good videos of engines running on Utube. Lovely engines, the combination of 2LW and PRM 260 gearbox is good, the recommended tickover speed is 320rpm, some owners set this too low - not recommended. SP's advice is sound..........
