  1. That is not strictly true. She does listen and has been helped by many kind souls on here, both virtually and in person. You could try to see her as more than just a figure of fun.
  2. My husband submits several large invoices a year and similarly has never issued or been asked for a receipt, but that is not the problem here as I understand it. I don't think anyone would be threatening to damage the reputation or try and cause a small business issues with HMRC/VAT over a lack of receipts! I agree that we will probably never know the full details of Lady G's dealing with her tradesmen, nor do we need to. However she chooses to make it the forum's business and if she can be guided to less acrimonious and stressful outcomes - for all concerned - surely that is a good thing? Sometimes it is hard to stand back and see another point of view and as a solo mature boater (who might at times feel slightly vulnerable?) it must be helpful to get other perspectives, or else she wouldn't air her issues in this way. Edited to add: I have been following the forum for a good few years now and briefly met with Lady G a few years ago when she was in Lincoln. She was great company and I think she is admirable for what she manages to do her own - not without a little drama here and there admittedly, but I have much respect for her.
  3. I've reread the thread but am a bit confused. @LadyG have you clearly confirmed with the contractor that you no longer want him to finish the "next job", after he completed the "main job"? You were informed (presumably - unless of course you heard through a third party) that there was an issue with ill health so it seems fair to accept a delay in proceedings. If it is a case of you changing your mind then it seems entirely reasonable to me that he retains the couple of hundred pounds for being messed around. He may have turned down other work to be with you and is therefore faced with an unexpected gap in his diary. The fact that he has taken delivery, stored and may have already stated work on the materials you provided for the next job implies that he has actually begun the "next job". A couple of hundred pounds is at most only a day's work so I think he is justified in retaining your upfront payment. It seems reasonable to ask for the return of the materials but I expect he is not feeling particularly happy with how he has been treated. What precisely are your materials he has? As you say, he and his wife are trying to run a small business - not easy in today's economic climate. It sounds like they have done a satisfactory job for you to date and it is a great shame that relations have soured.
  4. This might be of interest - a scale model of Enid. Coming up for auction in Lincoln this week (Lot 873). Lot 874 is another narrowboat model. A scale model of a canal boat or barge, The Enid, owned by a William R Fox of Nuneaton, polychrome decorated with realistic surroundings, to include shire horse, etc., in teak and perspex case, 80cm wide. (goldingyoung.com) Lot 943 is of a lock-keepers cottage on the Grand Union near Brentford.
  5. The new cabin boy/girl looks eager to get on board!
  6. Thanks and sorry for not making it easy x
  7. Mods can we merge the 2 threads under Waterways News?
  8. Recommend joing the tidal Trent FB group. I've left now I've sold my boat but think it was called Trentlink. A really useful group and you should be able to buddy up with another boater through the group.
  9. Waterways on Countryfile now Funding of CRT etc approved

  11. I can only see that potentially damaging the mooring ring and hand rail as well as polluting the canal with grindings and filler, blacking etc. Get it docked and do it properly.
  12. An easy solution to hold curtains in at the bottom is dowel for wardrobe rails with the associated fittings. Available in all DIY stores.
  13. Sounds like you are being very sensible. Don't be too disheartened as your boat will come along. Also think how much you have learned by going through this process/ordeal. Best of luck and also with your move.
  14. As your children are in their 30s and 40s and are outdoorsy I'd say don't be constrained by limiting the number of locks. They are fun and will be easy peasy with 4 adults on a boat. Hubby and I regularly did 30+ in a day and the sense of achievement is superb - nothing like feeling you have really earned a pint at the end of a day's busy boating! So much of the network is stunningly beautiful so you will be spoilt for choice. Hope you all have a great time.
  15. I may be in a minority but I find it quite entertaining when topics go on a meander. It's only when people start bitching and being hateful to each other that I turn away. I haven't even got my boat any more, but I still can't leave the forum behind.
  16. Talking of spiders, I had one living in and around my driver's wing mirror. It was quite big. I rather hoped it would blow off while I was driving but it didn't. I didn't want to squish it so I drove to a carpark in the north of the city, fished it and its cobweb off with a bit of branch and put it on a hedge at the edge of the carpark. Then I drove straight home. The next day there was a new cobweb on my wing mirror! It was either back or I had some of its family still with me. Nevertheless I was gobsmacked. Clever creatures although very scary.
  17. You can get different coloured tile trim and also different coloured grout & sealant in loads of shades to compliment coloured tiles, which might look nicer than white in your other areas. I hope the negative comments haven't taken the shine off your new galley and that it gives you lots of pleasure. https://www.sealantsandtoolsdirect.co.uk/soudal-color-ral-colour-coloured-premium-silicone-sealant?option=897&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA_OetBhAtEiwAPTeQZ-CVi5eoOExx2KFjSaHIyLxLBgTjtMfR_wuC9FtEc9rsVVnTtHyU8BoCWFoQAvD_BwE https://www.sealantsupplies.co.uk/products/rainbow-ral-coloured-silicone-300ml/
  18. Think I'm missing something. The boat was due to be lifted and surveyed today. The survey will now take place a little later in the week. The boat needs blacking/epoxying. If it were me I would get the boat out as planned and wait for the surveyor. Whether the OP ends up buying the boat or not they will likely be paying for the lifting, survey and relaunch. Or is this a case of the boat being owned by the marina with the lift out facilities who were offering to crane in and out for free? I would not think it wise for a newbie boater to skip getting a survey - despite the flaws we know them to have. Was the OP planning on getting the hill coating sorted at the marina?
  19. No wonder CRT are happy to add a surcharge on CMers.
  20. It was -6c in hubby's car when he set off from Lincoln this morning.

  22. Armley Mill, Leeds. Probably the best place I've ever been to in the boat was Wightwick Manor near Wolverhampton.
  23. Needs the latest edition. Chapter 8:Working in Confined Spaces (up to 4 people)
  24. For a very cheap and effective tile effect you could do the following:- Choose a colour and buy a tin of gloss and a tin of matt paint in the same shade. Paint the whole area in matt. Depending on the base surface you may need to use a primer first. Mask out 'grout lines' using fine line masking tape. (De-tack it by sticking each strip to fabric, eg jeans/overalls, a couple of times if required.) Then paint over the area in gloss. The matt paint acts as an undercoat for the gloss. Remove masking tape when dry. This will be cheap, quick, reasonably hard wearing and easy to touch up in the future. Using the same colour in different levels of sheen can be extremely effective and good value. Look forward to pictures of the rest of your new galley. V exciting! NB you could use a lighter shade of matt to make the grout lines stand out more but this might look a bit gimmicky imo. (You are giving the 'effect' of tiles rather than trompe l'oeil).
