  1. could grate cheese on the roof edges along the length of the boat Is it true that Springers were made from the re claimed steel from the old huge gas reservoirs once seen all over the country?
  2. Wow this is a great site, I trained on Colchester lathes as an apprentice at Ford, Dagenham in 1980.....
  3. I'm in the middle of sound deadening my engine bay, the whole deck is chequer plate so its a huge sound box down there. I bought 10mm thick rubber sheet with heat shielding foil. Unfortunately there are a couple of big gaps around the steps into the boat which were left when the deck was made. Closing the gaps will make a vast improvement I hope... Wondering what a silencer would cost to have made/fitted, the pipe is straight through!!
  4. Hmmm I have a small cylinder, accumulator in the engine bay. Never heard of one before owning a narrowboat. Just curious. Could someone please tell me in laymans terms why I need one and is it for the hot or cold water? Tom.........learning quickly here :-)
  5. I have my first boat, it has a Bukh 10hp single pot diesel. Even for a narrowboat I think it's slow......old ladies pushing zimmer frames walk past me on full throttle And I discovered why theres a full size set of ear defenders in the cupboard. I'm in the process of sound deadening the engine bay...
  6. I'm new to the site. Anyone know why 1 comment is shown in bold font but then it says no comments to display?? There are 1800 plus views here, surely someone commented haha
  7. Stirred something up here! You'd never get away with no flue on a house boiler so i'd expect the same would apply on a boat you may or may not live in ? I think if I got a slightly bigger diameter collar for the roof the whole lot would fit. the inner tube slides down and fits nicely onto the draft diverter on the heater. The outer tube just sits on top of the collar, it seems to me that it should slide over this to sit on that large flange which is sealed to the roof. Wondering if a local engineering firm could spin and stretch the ali' collar to give it a couple more millimetres in diameter...
  8. Oh no as I'd been paying 40% of my income in tax for many years i've never shirked responsibility in that respect. Was considering some sort of diesel heater of course. Wonder how many self employed could say the same
  9. Matty40s, your photographs are fantastic. And OMG you have a pic of the prettiest house I ever saw, canalside.....at Norton on the bend beside a bridge. Passed it and just "wow" Tom.
  10. Phew, I got straight on the phone.....no floods or warnings in force. I'll sign up to the messaging service when the EA are open for business. I dont expect the tow paths flood to much so a slack rope should suffice, right??
  11. Wow now i'm worried! Floods after two days rain.... Not quite at the Nene yet but not far off. Didnt think the banks would dissappear so easily. Hope I manage to find something substantial to moor to at the end of each weekend....
  12. Anyone good with puzzles? This should be easy but i'm having trouble assembling this flue on the boat, I suspect somethings the wrong size or missing? Have a Rinnai water heater on the wall and found the flue, pictured, in the cupboard. The flue appears to be brand new, the boiler isnt. Im guessing the large flanged collar is silicone sealed to the roof and the small ring separates the inner and outer flue tubes creating the double skin. Problem is that the outer tube is exactly the same diameter as the large collar so it will not slide down over it, just sits on top. Midland chandlers cant help! Tom
  13. Interesting. the roof line welding is awful...
  14. thats good news jarrah as i'm getting the red stuff for 50p a litre
  15. Will paint my springer next summer, anyone ground off welds? My boats covered in terrible welding...
  16. Looks like an old thread but i'd like to throw out a question... Did my old Bukh engine, and similar, run on red diesel once upon a time? If so the old engines must have been built to handle it..
  17. I'd like to think I could take the boat out occasionally through winter. Just wondering how to drain canal water out of the engine, I know there's a tap near the bottom end of the intake pipe but that still leaves water above that in the pipe....
  18. Ah right. thanks for the pic. My gas pipe is copper and looks like 10mm which I think is close to 3/8", taking a micrometer out Saturday to check. Have to be sure of the sizes as each fitting (couplings and elbow) cost around £12 each. Extortionate price I reckon.
  19. Wonder if I can wrap the engine in something as we will be mooring riverside with no electricity?
  20. Hi AdamG. I have exactly the same boiler, needs plumbing for gas. Do you know if the gas fittings are 3/8" ? Tom
  21. You're right Matty, calmnessss
  22. Afternoon all, As a new boat owner and user of canals and rivers I have to say, this site is a god send, it's so interesting and helpful. The members here bend over backwards to give help and advice. How do I donate please? Tom. Oops. a look at the top of the page would be a good start
  23. Been reading this thread. I would have to accept that Marina's are expensive places, it's a leisure industry and also the size of the market, eg. The motorcycle world is more expensive that the car world, the boat world is more expensive that the motorcycle world and so on. However, I'd draw the line at having my boat blocked in, I'd see red and cut the ropes with the nearest knife and push their boat out of the way! Sorry, not diplomatic is it
  24. problem is that if you winterize, you have to undo all the work if you fancy a little cruise during winter. Question, how do I get the water out of my engine, it's cooled with canal water so I cant use anti freeze!
  25. Right ok. I'll try different fuel too. Managed to light the coal without kindling last time, just fire lighters.
