  1. Ah right, so does CRT have marinas like private owners do? Or are CRT moorings the ones you find along the remote parts of the canal along the towpath? Or both? This will be my last question . . . for tonight
  2. Cheers Mike. So, I notice most are leisure moorings going up to and around £2000 and I saw a residential mooring for £5000. If you do not have to leave a leisure mooring, where or what is the difference between the 2?
  3. Thanks for the link, although I tried to use this a few days ago and also just now and it turns up nothing!! I will try and get to talk with someone face to face or on the phone at some point. I always seem to go down cul-de-sacs using the internet! I have googled looking for the answers to my questions but cannot find anything that actually answers them!!
  4. Cheers Mike, how does one go about that? Sorry to sound naive but that's exactly what I am at this stage
  5. Yeah thanks. I guess some legwork is in order, think I would prefer residential then I have the security of having somewhere rather than moving every couple of weeks and not finding anywhere?
  6. Im a tradesman and when I go to work I get my days jobs and go out and do them, so I will always be using my van, never the train or public transport. Do you know the price of a leisure mooring or does that again depend on the location? I have a job on tomorrow morning so will do a bit of towpath viewing in the afternoon hopefully finding some people to chew the fat with
  7. Hi Alan - sounds like good advice but maybe I will have to do research around that area? See where lets me stay for what length of time and see where I can only stay for a short spell. If I moored up at a random area along the canal, would that allow me 14 days? And if this is the case, how far do I have to move when my time is up?
  8. Thanks again hey magictime, sounds like you get about! Erm, the thing is I work in Horsforth and sometimes long hours so I would find it almost impossible to get back to the boat of an evening and move it somewhere else, then have to move my vehicle aswell? Or am I missing something in your explanation? I guess if I was retired I could do these things . . ? cheers Arthur. Going out hopefully on Sunday Again thanks for taking the time to write, your knowledge is well appreciated. Where abouts are you based Tony?
  9. Lister? I read mainly good reports about them . . .
  10. Thanks Oldgoat especially on the engine advice. So if I want Sky sports I can have it? I guess it just means pointing the dish in the right direction? Im not decided yet but thought I would ask as it popped in my head as I was typing the OP Nice to know about the steel longevity not about kicking the bucket Hi Traveller yes, my main requirement is the boat being in good order as well as making sure I have a good engine. The cosmetics are a little further down the order - priorities
  11. Hi Tony thanks for the info. Can I ask what will seem an obvious question? 10, 6, 4 in the same condition as 6, 6, 4 or 8, 6, 4 would be the better option? I spoke with my friend today who uses 4G dongle with EE network and he goes camping miles from anywhere and says his signal is much quicker than his home broadband!! He is very technically minded and often explains things to me in a way he is talking with another tekkie as you can probably guess, I am not technically minded but as long as I know I can have wifi With the Sky freeview, is there a way I can get Sky Sports. I have subscribed to Sky for the last 20 years so never needed the use for freeview Thanks again
  12. Thank you Ms Boo I will go to marina(s) on Sunday. Nice to meet a fellow cartoon character
  13. Hi all. I am in the market for a live aboard narrowboat and would like some initial information about certain things if anyone would be so kind as to help? I know I can ask any prospective sellers when I go to view any boats but I would prefer some neutral, non bias advice. I have done some research and would like to know if there are any types of engine to avoid and at the same time, any that are recommended? How often do you need to lift boat for blacking? How much does this cost for say a 45ft boat? What are the costs for the compulsory things such as licenses for using the waterways, insurance and anything else I need to take into account. I would be looking to have a mooring on the Leeds/Liverpool canal somewhere between Leeds city centre and up to 8 miles west of central Leeds. What is a recommended thickness for the steel? I see 10mm/6mm/4mm - is this recommended? I was under the impression years ago that gas oil was used on boats, is this the case? Is it possible to have wifi and satellite tv on a boat? Sorry for all the questions but if anyone would be kind enough to offer me answers or any advice I would be most grateful. Thank you
  14. Hi to all out there. I am looking at buying a narrowboat in the future and before I go down the route of viewing vessels and being told by sellers whilst viewing, what they think I want to hear, I would like some neutral, non biased opinions and information about living aboard. I have a budget and it isn't a kings ransom and I am happy to live on something that I can improve as I live on it. My main worry is making sure I buy something with a good engine (supplied by a reputable manufacturer) as I have done some reading and see that there are ones that some recommend and some advise to avoid. Also i see that there are different thicknesses to the hull and sides of the boat - could anybody advise on what to avoid if some are 'too thin' I have no idea on how often a vessel needs 'blacking' or the costs of this. I suppose the price would be around the same region from one company to the next but I am guessing that depending on where the boat is moored, the costs of lifting out of the water could vary greatly? As you have probably guessed, I am quite naive but I understand living aboard is not just a case of buying a boat and thats it. My knowledge of engines is somewhere between zero and 5 on a scale of 1 - 100 and if the engine was to fail in the middle of winter I would be in trouble!! I guess I am trying to say that I think I would be OK with the cosmetic side of living aboard, but the mechanical side would give me trouble and this is my worry about taking the step to living aboard. So, for the time being, if there is anyone that could advise me on . . . 1) Reputable makes of engines? 2) How often a boat needs blacking? 3) An acceptable steel thickness? 4) Costs of lifting out of water? 5) Moorings costs and locations between Leeds and Rodley (west Leeds) I have tried to find the info on number 5) via google and cannot even find mooring locations in this area never mind costs, and I appreciate there will be a limited few that could provide this info 6) Any fees that I have missed such as License, waterway fees or anything else that is standard 7) Lastly, I was under the impression that gas oil (red diesel) was OK to be used as fuel to power the boat? Is this still the case? I realise I have asked a lot, but any help would be greatly appreciated Much love
