  1. AFAIK it could be used in either sense but to put yu out of your misery I will check...
  2. Thanks all. Perhaps a spare for the JiC locker is a good idea. N
  3. Thanks all. The 90A alternator has served me well for CC'ing. We did nearly three years of that. A replacement will be 90A when the time comes. N
  4. A supplementary to the other thread that I have just started. I have a 10mm wide pulley on the crank shaft of my BMC 1.5 What is the maximum current that I should be thinking of when/if I get an new alternator? N
  5. My alternator has done rather more than 5,300 hours. Should I think of prophylactically changing it? It's a 90A Bosch.
  6. But aren't the electrons more dense than water?
  7. I once went to the timber merchant and asked for a six foot length of timber for my 6 foot bench and when I got back home it as and inch short. "That's a metric 6 foot, sir" they said when I complained
  8. Now that's interesting. I have read that the Shropshire Union has the deeper locks at the lower levels. It wasn't explained but I rationalised this by assuming that there is a gradual accumulation of water as you go down the locks. This was from diverted steams etc.
  9. And in Standedge Tunnel you will be out of the rain.
  10. Cats and dogs it is and has been for most of the afternoon. There was lots of rain last night, too. The summit pound is weiring over E and W locks. We are moored below lock 44 because, although we are not up to schedule, we decided that it was just too wet to go on. On the way east we were inconveniently short of water. Now, on the way west, there is too much. Other canals seem to have much better water management. What different about the Rochdale?
  11. That's perfectly true. What they do is to increase the air flow around whichever part of the body is in the flow from the fan. It he body is not sweaty and the air temperature is lower that the body temperature then the rate of heat transfer to the air will be greater leasing to an increase in comfort. If the body is sweaty then the rate of evaporation of said sweat will be greater leading to a much greater loss of heat from the body.
  12. While you are considering the "petrol" generator, be aware that petrol is a) difficult to come by on the water and b) expensive. Consider a gas conversion. I fitted a conversion when my Kipor was quite new and have found it so much more economical.
  13. I think that there might be incorrect use of the suffix there. Moaner = the one who moans Moanee = the one who is moaned at. ? N
  14. You bet it does. About 20A during start up and 5A (IIRC) when its running. To be pedantic, it uses a glow plug, not a spark as it starts up and then a fan and a pump continuously. N
  15. The loop is there for target practice for small dogs.
  16. And I though that the loop was to pass the rope through so that when the pin pulled out from the ground you didn't lose it in the cut
  17. If you are talking about a loose ring then I would guess that those would last a good long time. I am talking about the welded trywrangly thing. N I think that there might be some faulty physics there, Mr Bizzard
  18. I never bother with the loops even when present. I put a clove hitch on the pin which provides enough friction to hold the pin on the mooring line if it gets pulled right out and drops in the cut. The last pin that I bought was properly treated and never had its loop bashed but within a week the loop had shaken off! N
  19. We moored at Failsworth the night before last. Very quiet and pleasant.
  20. Which Swing bridge? Or is there only one on the Ashton? Nick
  21. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  22. Is it all open and properly operational now? We want to return from the Rochdale via the Ashton and Macc. N
  23. Splendid replies, Dave. The lock cottage at Slattocks Top sounds best.
