Completely agree with this. We've just spent several weeks scouring the internet and brokers looking for 'our' boat. We more or less knew/know what we wanted, with a few provisos where we'd compromise. Despondency does set in after the umteenth time of viewing boats where photos had not shown the true 'reality', smelly boats, and 'depressed' and obviously unloved boats.
For us a boat that has been loved and cared for is worth a few thousand £'s extra, and it's is so obvious to tell. Ask if maintenance receipts have been kept - the reaction is very telling.
A boat that had been fitted out by the owner was something that didn't appeal as it's obvious, by most of them we've seen, the owner was out of his depth. But we did travel 150 miles to view an 'owner fit out' and was so impressed with the care taken, the attention to detail, and the uniqueness, that we made an offer there and then. We KNEW this was THE ONE! If problems do arise, then they'll be dealt with, the main point was that the boat felt right - sorry can't define it more than this.
Now can't wait for August Bank Holiday when the boat will be ours, and we sail off in her....
We must have visited half doz or so marinas with brokerage, and left our contact details with them, together with the criteria for our search. So far none has come back with a boat, except Great Heywood. GH have been brilliant!
Buying through a broker, for us, was essential as we'd heard lots of stories where boats have been 'sold' several times, sold with an undisclosed mortgage, a couple had split up and the 'angry party' had sold the boat behind the back of the Ex, and so on.... Going through a broker has given us peace of mind.
