  1. Thank you Pearley, my husband will take a look at this. Thanks Dor, sorry for being vague, it's the 'speed control' made by Vetus.
  2. Please could you help? While cruising; the throttle set position gradually drops back from the 'set position' reducing the engine speed. Is there anyway I can adjust the control i.e. increase the friction so the throttle stays in the same position? It's impossible to cruise maintaining a set speed without having to keep my hand on the throttle lever Ta very much for any help
  3. That's what I've heard, yet it comes easier to me to call it winding as in winding a clock.....
  4. Awwww, he's gorgeous! Well done you! Luca is so worth all the effort you can give, and he looks like he's landed on his feet at last. I think humans are so horrible in the main. So please that there are compassionate humans like you to help these thousands of poor animals. I could cry when I think how dogs trust and love unconditionally, yet we, as humans take that love for granted.
  5. Completely agree with this. We've just spent several weeks scouring the internet and brokers looking for 'our' boat. We more or less knew/know what we wanted, with a few provisos where we'd compromise. Despondency does set in after the umteenth time of viewing boats where photos had not shown the true 'reality', smelly boats, and 'depressed' and obviously unloved boats. For us a boat that has been loved and cared for is worth a few thousand £'s extra, and it's is so obvious to tell. Ask if maintenance receipts have been kept - the reaction is very telling. A boat that had been fitted out by the owner was something that didn't appeal as it's obvious, by most of them we've seen, the owner was out of his depth. But we did travel 150 miles to view an 'owner fit out' and was so impressed with the care taken, the attention to detail, and the uniqueness, that we made an offer there and then. We KNEW this was THE ONE! If problems do arise, then they'll be dealt with, the main point was that the boat felt right - sorry can't define it more than this. Now can't wait for August Bank Holiday when the boat will be ours, and we sail off in her.... We must have visited half doz or so marinas with brokerage, and left our contact details with them, together with the criteria for our search. So far none has come back with a boat, except Great Heywood. GH have been brilliant! Buying through a broker, for us, was essential as we'd heard lots of stories where boats have been 'sold' several times, sold with an undisclosed mortgage, a couple had split up and the 'angry party' had sold the boat behind the back of the Ex, and so on.... Going through a broker has given us peace of mind.
  6. This reminded me of the time I lost my eyebrows, lashes and fringe! It was my first adventure on the canals as a young 18 year old, holidaying with a boyfriend on the Leeds to Lancaster canal in a hired cruiser. We were moored up for the night, and I was about to get 'dolled up' as we were going out for a few drinks in a pub. Boyfriend was out on the 'deck' filling the outboard's tank with petrol in readiness for the next day. I thought this would be a good time for a cup of tea, so I turned on the gas, and struck a match..... the match broke into two with the lit end falling on the floor. Without a thought I bent down to retrieve the lit end, just as the low lying fumes caught fire for a few seconds. Unfortunately as I bent down my head got caught up in the flash. I was a messy teanager in those day (well more than now), and my tights which was strewn on the floor melted! Eeeeee the stupidity of youth!

  9. We're just in this process and are buying a 58' semi trad. To be pulled out of the water, power washed, with two coats of bitumen blacking, we're being charged £485. While it's out of the water, we thought it a good idea to get the blacking done as the last time was in 2014. Full boat survey is £499.

  11. I've not seen these coconuts, but have read (somewhere ???) they can hold human ashes. Obviously they are split open, filled, and sealed again. It's all biodegradable. CRT say they cause a nuisance in locks. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/news-and-views/blogs/waterfront/sacred-canals http://www.sanskritimagazine.com/rituals_and_practices/importance-and-significance-of-coconut/
  12. Thank you Tony and TC, will give them a ring. Appreciate your response!
  13. Hopefully we'll be moving onto our new boat in a couple of weeks (subject to survey). There're some things in the boat we'd like to change, such as; adding two doors outside the bathroom, at the moment the boat has a sliding door from the corridor/bathroom (to make the corridor part of the bathroom - does this make sense?) There are other possible jobs for a carpenter, depending on the feasibility. So my question is.... Can anyone recommend a good mobile carpenter? We'll be moored up at Hinckley for the month of September, but can move the boat after that to be nearer to a good carpenter. Any help is kindly appreciated!
  14. I made a sun canopy using specialist UV resistant fabric - but forgot to use UV resistant cotton, after a few sunny months disaster struck! My 'beautiful' sun canopy resembled shabby rags!

  18. Some of the snippets are a bit gruesome and macabre, but it's all about the life of those who lived around the canal around 150 years ago. It was a terribly hard life.... shown by the 'excesses' of the people. I love historical facts re the working class, and thought others might be interested in this 'web page find' that I came across. http://static.premiersite.co.uk/23415/docs/6638223_1.pdf
  19. We've somehow got ourselves on an email mailing list for 'Canal Boat' magazine - the email featured an article about the boat theft. Mailout was from specialistmags@archant.co.uk and was received yesterday. Though it stated the boat was still missing. This mailout could probably large

  22. I understand EE has got the emergency service contract for inland waterways, also for police etc.http://ee.co.uk/our-company/newsroom/2015/12/10/ee-selected-to-deliver-critical-new-4g-voice-and-data-network-for-britains-emergency-services Don't know where I got the info about inland waterways ..... can't find it on Google either. But I'm pretty sure I'm correct. Thanks for this information!
