  1. I'm a big fan of Varta Hobby 28's a little bit more but after 4 sets all lasting 5 years a piece 2 in my ownership and 2 in the previous owner who ran a commercial vehicle/battery garage worth a look - pellion tyres/batteries on the web
  2. Great river - we spent 2 years moored at Oundle app 10 years ago and have also been back twice since last time in Autumn 2016. Moorings not plentiful but I think there is a "friends of .... society" which now helps - you don't say how long or what type of boat under 60ft is an advantage and we boated most recently with a tug which was a challenge on some lock moorings as the river is kitted out much more for sub 40ft GRP cruisers with higher gunwhales. You can get caught out if the weather turns wet as it is a drainage system first and a navigable river second so don't plan your itinerary too tightly. A deep draft can also be a challenge on the Gayton/Northampton stretch we were 34" and had some issues with the weed. Definitely give it a go if you never have - its a rare treat and pretty undiscovered.
  3. I finally found a great guy who I used and another who was busy but highly recommended - PM me if you want details
  4. latest boat with twin controls has a notch in the rod which just (slightly) drops as you traverse from forward to reverse - not had it before relied on tape painted lines etc all OK but this is very good and very simple.
  5. Still good, but not what it was, less character higher prices - but the Fish and Chips is to die for!
  6. IMHO - better to stop at the tame otter in Hopwas or if you just want to drink the one over the road whose name I cant remember and then the mucky duck at fradley or vv!
  7. I've just got to this one and as usual its gone a bit off the OPs topic ............... Having spent the last 50 years owning app 15 boats roughly 50% were surveyed and 50% not, more recently we've spent the last few months buying that which we now own with 3 fails en-route - my thoughts/experience on surveys are that they are worth it If you know what you are doing as your boating career progresses then by all means just survey the hull but if you are new to this great hobby of ours and don't know anything then IMHO you need an expert opinion but NOT someone already connected to the boat, or the broker, or the boatyard in anyway and DONT trust surveys which come with the boat. Surveys in the last 5 months have stopped us buying 2 pricey post yr20000 boats with poor steel/electrics, poor paint/steel but in the final analysis saved us a lot of money in buying fixable problems we were happy to take on and resolve at our leisure. My assessment of the market today is your biggest enemy is on board DIY electrics and the corrosion issues they can cause and to a lesser degree poorly prepared/delivered paintjobs which are expensive to fix but do also beware of anything that hasn't been used. Just heard that a very close friend has been diagnosed with cancer with her husband similarly affected 3 months prior so above all don't get too hung up on problems - a lot of this is common sense and make sure you do end up with a boat and pursuing your dream..................
  8. Hi, I'm being offered a Baldwin P352 as an alternative to L21779 is that OK?? What Oil do people use - Morris XHD30 ring free or classic or something else?? Thanks from a Gardner "virgin" BTW Walsh engineering get my vote great service and pricing on my porous cylinder block replacement last week - cant say enough VG
  9. Good recommendation --------- I totally agree AND easy to maintain.
  10. OK - fair enough, I'm of an age where PC excesses drive me crazy.
  11. Really........................ I wouldn't have posted if it wasn't appropriate - Ray (ex Streethay Wharf owner) has been in business moving boats across the channel and elsewhere for at least 30 years
  12. I suggest you make contact with Ray Bowern - there isn't anything he doesn't know about the process - ray.bowern@gmail.com; 07860 729522
  13. Resolved - I removed the box from its mounting and sufficient wiring notes were on the back!
  14. Hi I've just "inherited" a Kigass 6BG(HV)D9877 spark ignition unit with my old but totally unused vanette 7000 oven and 4000/2 hob BUT not all the wires are connected has anybody out there got a wiring diagram or got one that they could look at and come up with something to help me out what's worse is that all the wires look to be grey - I've not investigated forensically as yet. Thanks
  15. Totally unacceptable - this canal/arm really seems to be under constant threat - why don't they understand how much people use/love it - it was failing last year during the season, didn't someone put it on a list! Keep up the good work! Do CART read these "use related" posts does anyone know ..............................
  16. I've always used "mohair" radiator rollers they are app 4" long, look like velvet and are generally orangey in colour - readily available, a little more expensive but they last well in use and can be cleaned off if you feel the need.
  17. Noted with thanks - this assumes a basic premise that insurance companies pay out.................... I'll keep on protecting my boat But I will have a read............
  18. I agree - I have used them for years 1 for each 10 ft of boat cabin Cheers
  19. A Creighton Inlander 32 I think - shame nice boats
  20. I have to disagree - we cruised down to the Thames last year ran aground on the summit numerous times and got stuck in at least 3 locks (esp Sommerton) generally due to lack of clearing behind gates and bulging side walls and then when we wanted to come back we had to go via the GU as the summit was closed due to lack of water - pretty poor for what is the most used waterway in the country I believe. Like you I try to be one of the 1/2 full brigade - a bit like the Oxford and Leicester Arm summits in the summer!
  21. Is it just me or shouldn't this be passed on to someone who should might care - I'm happy to do so if someone tells me who.
  22. Not to mention the "top dogs" pay offs when they leave after merging with EA as there will be real work to do and less time for photo calls - Hmmmmmm so that's what the bond issue is for??
  23. We had full kit on the Nene years ago incl long flat (firemans type) hoses etc - so from experience - using pump out kit is pretty crap (someone had to say it!) the only good place to store it all is on the roof cos it smells so that's even worse and then people will assume you occasionally pump out where you shouldn't so I would leave it well alone.
