  1. clearly you have no need of help or advice then.............................
  2. If you haven't been boating before then you are not the man to plan a new boat please be contnet to rely on tried and tested solutions from reputable builders and go for good used or even "pre-owned!" Make sure you enjoy the journey but don't try to re-invent the wheel
  3. Wow - it's another world - I love boys toys - great stuff - thanks for the info
  4. House Insurance and buying/storing dog food were our challenges when we started our great adventure under the same circumstances 3 years ago. Dog food - try to wean "fido" off anything special but if you cant, and we couldn't, you do need to plan - we get it delivered to friends on our route and always have a supply at relatives who we typically see once a month House Insurance we have found an insurer who will do 90 days (app £50 additional premium and slightly higher excess) BUT remember you don't just have to visit you (not a friend) have to stay over at least one night and be able to prove it. Make sure you depart as worry free as possible Last tip JOIN RCR and IMHO silver membership is best value.
  5. that's pretty cool, I assume a drone not a helicopter - genuine question, before this topic degenerates, did you fly and control the camera single handed? Is the equipment pretty average/generally available or sophisticated I can already see a use for it in seeing if there is a better mooring spot just around the corner (god forbid)

    PRM 500

Conventional controls - I think I will suck it and see - on a past boat Perkins D3 and PRM 260 I did the conversion but I was never completely convinced it made that much difference - I don't like clunks but if as I'm advised by PRM its just the lack of pressure relief then I'll live with it . After all its not like I do Morse style fast shifts! Thanks

    PRM 500

Hi, I have a pre soft shift PRM500 attached to my 2LW the bits to modify/change in situ are £275 - what experience do others have with this set up - is it worth doing?? The cheaper option is to take the box out then a rebuild and change is £150 but I don't want the hassle unless the box has an issue (not expected) which I guess I'll find out when I start using her next month. Or I might just park the idea and remove/change next winter.

  11. Hey its a bit early for cruising anyway - esp in your part of the world this week but at least you are 1/2 way there - perhaps I should have rephrased "not boating but boat ownership!" J
  12. Hi, Looks even better now with new shiny "elephants trunk" air inlet fitted hope you are enjoying your boating!!
  13. That's way over the top for the survey! You can do much better for cash and consider whether you actually want a written report as most surveyors hate writing! I don't think I've ever had a written report usually just the steel thickness sheet. What you need is informed opinion you may not need paperwork............................. As others have said make sure YOU appoint him and he's not the brokers mate Chris Williams Ovation Boats surveys also covers that area.
  14. Hi, I have just replaced the oil bath air filter and related manifold on my 2LW and am looking to sell it - I will try eBay but thought I'd give it a go on here first. Looks like new comes with filter and manifold is unpolished - £45 + postage ???

  16. I beg to differ W2 may be a nice boat but - a proper 70ft Roger Fuller has just sold for less than that - and ABNB currently have a Roger Farrington at app £100k - both way out of my budget but IMHO no comparison.
  17. Gradually upgrading and I like change, part of my enjoyment of this "hobby" is to work on boats and get the best out of them for posterity - ask anyone who has bought from me I have had long standing connections to all but two of my past boats and still have to 4 of them - last year 3 were together at exactly the same time at Hillmorton! Over time we have had new, ex working, ex hire, tugs, trads, cruisers 31ft to 62 ft, engine rooms with DM2, D3, P3 & 2LWs - also 2 river boats a freeman 23 and a 30ft Dutch steel cruiser.
  18. I don't think there are used boats at Crick as such but clearly lots of brokers nearby. Food for thought - the only "disaster" we have had in 30 years of boating with our own boats was with our only new boat - never again!
  19. Just spent the afternoon creosoting my new set of (Joe Hollingshead) fenders - very pleased - and yes I did use the proper stuff.
  20. IMHO having just bought our 10th narrowboat (over 30 years) you don't need to spend £85k - there are good boats about for around £60k - look for a well travelled fully shaken down 10-15 year old well maintained boat built by a good known builder and preferably a with professional fit out and if DIY look for things like the electrics being done by known sub contractors with well known products. Your challenge will be finding and securing the right boat as the spring rush sets in so don't delay. My advice is therefore don't go for new - go to Crick by all means but not to buy a boat. It will probably be quite a stressful time, make sure you enjoy it and soak up all the info available - you are joining a great club and starting out on a great way of life.
  21. I didn't know Trevor well except as a "fixture" on the waterways scene over the last 50 years or so but all the postings and pictures definitely make one reflect on how fortunate he was to have truly lived the life we all love and over such a long period - I'm sure his life had its challenges but he was blessed to have had so many friends and to have really lived his life - well done Trevor!
  22. Blimey I wouldn't like to be publicly dammed today for something I did 20 years ago - I think we all should be allowed to learn from our mistakes not be haunted by them as if it were yesterday - in my book that's called experience.
  23. Yet another vote for Trevor esp in that area but there are others - Chris Williams and Justin Green of JG Marine both VG
