  1. If you keep your eyes open for the Amazon Prime Days, or other similar offers, a bargain can be found. Like MtB, I have a selection of multimeters around the boat and home, but last year I picked up a bargain from Amazon with a Clamp Meter that was AC/DC , plus multimeter meter and non contact voltage detection for just ubder £20. It is also useful for checking Solar circuits.
  2. When the boat is out and you can see the whole assembly, you may find that the problem is with the cup in the skeg. If you take up all the wear there your rattle should stop.
  3. like many in the EU, they will follow the rules they like but ignore those they don't. When we were in the EU, we would accept all and employ an army of civil servants to enforce them. Take the regulation about full automotive tax on propulsion fuel. Our suppliers were saddled with the paperwork and extra admin. In Ireland, boaters were asked to pay what they considered they owed when renewing their licences.
  4. How did you decide which mounts to buy? How were the Barrus mounts that you decided were too expensive specified? I always remember when my original mounts wore out, well one of them, I enquired at a chandlery and bought a new set. I spent several months trying to settle them in, and eventually found out that the original mounts were R&D mounts so I phoned them. I had to supply details of the boat length and the engine, gearbox and drive coupling and was quoted for a pair of front mounts and a pair of rear mounts. When I asked why I shouldn't fit 4 of the heavier ones, the response was that if I wanted to discount the advice of a manufacturer who had designed a product to do an important job, then that was my privilege. I bought what was specified, fitted them and immediately the vibration and noise stopped. They weren'y cheap, but you get what you pay for.
  5. Like all the "approved trade bodies", Gas, Oil, Electricity. All the authority but no responsibility.
  6. White kitchen or toilet roll will show the pink up best and for a small leak can pick up a leak quicker than coarser blue roll, and if you haven't got blue roll, then it's infinitely better. In my working life, servicing oil boilers, I used to carry blue roll for mopping up as it kept its texture better, but always used kitchen for leak detection.
  7. Symptom of low oil level, but if level is normal, maybe it has got too hot on river and loses its performance. Presumably you are skin tank cooled which may mean the oil cooler tempis not low enough when working hard on the river.

  9. First, make sure you keep the chimney swept. Second, do not overload the fire; which fire do you have and what do you burn? If the fire is too small for your requirement and you overfire it then you will get sparks. Another solution would be to fit a flue draught stabiliser so that the fire does not roar up the chimney.

  11. Like the Canaltime waiting at the top of Chirk tunnel with the light on, even after asking the crew member walking through the tunnel to ask them to turn it off. When I got to the other end and pointing out I may have been quicker if I could have seen where I was going she just said she didn't want someone else pinching her tunnel.

  13. The regulators and Civil Servants are responsible for rectifying this situation. The laws are already in place and just need enforcing. I wish i could get a job on one of these quangos; all the well paid salaries, or even worse, generous non taxable expenses without any responsibility.
  14. Fill the shower tray and wash it with your feet.
  15. Lots of these situations exist on the Shroppie and were contained in the original enabling Act. Concessions were made to several landowners and in at least two areas, the rules about mooring fees and BSS do not apply to boats moored there. (Obviously, if they move then they are liable to comply). Looking at the apex of Tyrley wharf, it would appear obvious why the resident is upset. at shebdon and High Onn, BW as it was at the time, piled the winding holes that the owners give permission , 'for considerate use'.

  18. My experience of phoning CaRT last month was that the person I spoke to (WFH) did not understand my question so could not answer. They passed on to another individual, but not the question I asked, and replied by email instead of the promised call. Therefore, in reply to the OP, by the time home based employees have contacted other home based employees, 48 hours is a virtual lifetime before your request is responded to.

On one occasion, with 12 boats waiting to pass from S&W to the shroppie, we passed 11 in one go. A couple of chaps on each gate with everyone in line. The 12th insisted on "doing it properly". I think you'll find that the boat yard regularly clear the top gate, but the only real problem is the people who insist on leaving fenders down.
  20. But bear in mind, a long blast on the horn does not absolve you from proceeding with due caution, or give you any priority.
  21. I've seen similar on S/Steel tanks. The problem will be that will be very thin and welding is very hit and miss on old tanks. Another thing to check is that there is sufficient ventilation toin the tank and that it is not blocked. Such a blockage can cause flexing and weaken the tank.

  23. I'm with GJW, and had a similar increase, but as it now includes RCR basic cover, my renewal with them went down so I'm paying about the same.
