  4. Our neighbours (house) have given up with curtains and frosted most of their windows (It's a plastic film which may not satisfy BSS anyway...) - from outside you can't see in but you can see if the lights are on (which you could with curtains). Of course it loses the "$#!t I hadn't realised we were that close to the lock" but it avoids the "why are you drawing the curtains, it's only ..."

  10. I once worked with someone who's attitude was "We're allowed 20 days sick leave a year, I've only used six, wonder when I should take the other 14?" - he didn't last long...
  11. Facebook was a failure of the internal domain so internal devices couldn't see outside to resolve the IP address of access control etc (Domain names are hierarchical so if you can't resolve canalworld.net you can't resolve (at least by default) access_control.canalworld.net) Yes, they had to break into their own datacentre to manually hack the IP address for a server to allow IT back online to fix the actual problem!
  12. But (for the OP) we're not talking about the hull. A dodgy earth wire twixt engine and instruments could cause all sorts of fun and games... [The other 'non obvious' commonality is there seem to be a lot of diodes who's sole purpose in life is to 'test' the bulbs that don't come on very often (overtemperature?) by tying them to one that does (Ignition)]
  13. And to facebook - made particularly entertaining as they had designed and built their own swipe card access system built around facebook so they managed to (physically) lock themselves out of their own datacentres! Thanks Admin team - appreciated
  14. Could not access from either Firefox (home PC) nor Chrome (Work Laptop)

  16. Annoyance is in the eye of the beholder - Mrs @1st ade keeps her mobile turned off unless she's walking the dog - then spends all evening moaning as my phone pings to itself.... right up to the ping that is our grandson "Nan, I've got an interview tomorrow, can you lend me the bus fare" when it becomes "it's a good job your phone was on" Cest le Vie (as the French never said)
  17. Ahem!! (realising that Magpie is merely quoting the original author)
  18. They may well be - we sold our last car through an auction house - the only thing they wanted initially was the index number - within seconds told us which size engine, which gearbox, towbar, that it had the optional front fog-lights etc. I think the days of a "standard build" are gone, every one is built to a particular spec
  19. Getting back to the original title...: - I've abused my "Lithium" battery - have I shortened its life / reduced its capacity? I've abused my "Lithium" battery - will my boat catch fire / sink when I'm not looking? I've abused my "Lithium" battery - am I a danger to my neighbours / the marina? Same question, different levels of severity - members of this forum (who try and be helpful) have attempted all three - the first is similar to the perpetual "I've just bought a boat, i've only had it two days and the lights have gone out" beloved by newbies - I'd argue the second and third are much more important - Batteries (no matter how expensive) can be replaced, lives can't.
  20. I'd assumed they gauged both sides and took an average... Although a cunning shout down the hatch "children - all on Mummy's bed" at the right moment could swing that one.

  22. Lock 17, Marple, on a very rainy day?
