  1. So the visible peltier fan unit wasn't a hint then? You'd actually be better off with a rigid coolbox with the works in the lid if going the cheap peltier route, as at least they don't lose all the cold air when you open them. I think you may have misread that bit. Temperature Range: 5-15°C Ice Making Facility: No
  2. How short is your tiller? Have you got a permanent fixed tiller or is it shaped to take an extension bar? (most are like this) On a trad stern you should be able to stand inside the rear doors while steering, so I'm wondering if you have a bit missing!
  3. Deep breaths Ange! I don't know who or what rattled your cage too hard, but chill and have a beer. I agree by the way! Signed yet another CCer with a car ...
  4. I tried using a longbow against a bluebottle once ... Didn't end well for the boat but the fly survived!
  5. Fully agree. The ones that aren't active keen boaters listen to the ones that are. One of the vollies has steered a pair including my boat both up and down the whole flight while I worked the locks. I regularly take vollies on my boat through the flight so they can see the other side of what they are doing and learn our perspective. Less so this year, admittedly. A couple of years ago we did Wigan Flight 18 times though, so it gets shared out!
  6. Short form from my memory ... bearing in mind I wasn't present for the "incident". Telemachus was approaching lock 75 on the nearside. The nearside tailgate on 75 suffers badly from subsidence on the lock, so if it's fully opened it usually takes three strong blokes to close it again. It's much easier for lockies and much faster for boats if this is avoided. As usual the volly helping the boat up the flight yelled "STOP", fully intending to explain why they should use the offside afterwards, as they do to every boat coming up. Instead of the usual "Sure, why?" they got a whole tirade about "You're only vollies, it's my boat, my lock, my rules. You don't have the right to tell me to stop." Having read your various rants online at the time, knowing the vollies well and being a regular on Wigan, I have formed my own opinion on the topic.
  7. 1. Stick a plastic bowl under outboards or outdrives when working on them. 2. Punt with a long shaft. 3. Untie the cheeky bugger and set them free ... (Assuming it's your permanent home mooring and not just where you were earlier!)
  8. How can you possibly get dragged forward if you are riding the plate?
  9. There was that chap that only made it halfway through the tunnel six years ago ...
  10. Fascinating comment Nick. I count many of the Wigan vollies as personal friends, and their recollection of your dummy spitting incident there is very different to your version of it ...
  11. Far from it, it was a response to Rob. Re-read the bit that says If they are going to be idiots, they will be idiots regardless. If they are not idiots the information might help. In fact, I'll go further than you did:. It's the drive end of a 1/4" socket extension bar, with anything you like to give a decent grip on the other end, or for the very irritating unscrew 50 turns fittings a power screwdriver!
  12. It's listed on the CRT reference map as OD-001, so I'd say it's CRT waters, even if they aren't sure. https://canalrivertrust.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapTools/index.html?appid=b46e3e0bda4a44a0be267df7674139a5 We just need someone to moor up on it for a few months and see what happens ...
  13. We suspect most of the "vandalism" that drains pounds around Wigan is a boater with a grudge against CRT. At the very least the "vandal" carries a handcuff key, a watermate key and a windlass. Letting people know what very common toolbox item can be substituted won't make the idiots less idiotic.
  14. Isn't a miniature record player pointless? It wouldn't be able to take standard 12 or 7 inch vinyl ...
  15. When the sun comes out you can watch the puddles dry for extra entertainment!
  16. My fridge did exactly that then went to 100% running and no cold. A regas fixed it back to running 20 minutes in the hour and cold again.
  17. You just saved me typing, thanks! It is very wet with a big 'un as you rightly point out so a well sealed boat - using gaffer tape if necessary on engine boards or cabin doors - is a must for doing it at full or oversized. Bingley is where you get the wettest on the L&L, but Wigan has a few seriously wet locks too. Try and share with a boat under 45 feet or go on your own through Bingley. The extra inches you can gain by being diagonal will make quite a difference. The current dimensions quoted for the L&L are here, showing Greenberfield as the shortest locks. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/original/32433-waterway-dimensions.pdf
  18. Well CRT demolished and fully rebuilt Hurleston lock last winter ... I know what you mean though. It's only usually pubs that change in the Nicholson guides, so I'm quite happy with my set of old ones. The odd relevant change (moved waterpoints etc) are rare enough that a correction in biro is good enough for me.
  19. I'd class a narrowboat holiday as both socialising indoors and outdoors and as staying overnight with more than one (other) household ... The list we have is one couple and up to 5 other singles, so six households in total.
  20. As it's against the current regulations, I can't see any hire firm willing to do it. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do#changes-in-restrictions 1.3 What should I still avoid doing? It remains the case that you should not: socialise indoors in groups of more than two households (anyone in your support bubble counts as one household) – this includes when dining out or going to the pub socialise outdoors in a group of more than six people from different households; gatherings larger than six should only take place if everyone is from exclusively from two households or support bubbles interact socially with anyone outside the group you are attending a place with, even if you see other people you know, for example, in a restaurant, community centre or place of worship hold or attend celebrations (such as parties) where it is difficult to maintain social distancing and avoid close social interaction – even if they are organised by businesses and venues that are taking steps to follow COVID-19 Secure guidelines stay overnight away from your home with members of more than one other household (your support bubble counts as one household)
  21. If you pick up a cheap multimeter on your way back from work or can borrow one and post the photos later, we still might be able to get you working again today or tomorrow.
  22. I don't know. Do you know where you get it from? The 1995 act defines a boat with no home mooring, but doesn't use the "continuous cruising" phrase anywhere.
  23. Those 24 shots of your left ear you took with the new camera before you got used to it came out well ...
