  1. Hostelcraft ran at different times the Margaret, I believe the Aston, and later the Pamela - which may have been a Bantocks boat. I once travelled in a converted lifeboat behind the Margaret, both pulled by Mary the horse, up the Llangollen canal, with Jack Roberts in charge.
  2. "Margaret" was a wooden boat, either ex- Anderton Co. or Mersey Weaver. - not sure offhand. It's not the W & E - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2937406
  3. But where would the water come from for a restored Lichfield - Huddlesford canal?
  4. I know that Sam Waller, a B'ham and Midland Director, had the prescence of mind to jump into the engine room and stop the engine (Petter PD2) saving that some damage
  5. First cousins - in fact there was a third cousin called Ron who emigrated to Australia. The Ron who appeared in this film is sadly no longer with us, having died ten years ago
  6. Much of this is from the Rank "Look at life" series called "Where no tide flows" obtainable on DVD.
  7. The "Dragon" with Charlie Atkins jnr
  8. The first picture is a well known one of the Asterope and Dubhe at Welton road bridge - the other side of Braunston tunnel (before rebuilding).Nos 2 and 3 bottom of Buckby, No 4 is the Asterope and Dubhe again at the top of Buckby, steerer Bert Wallington
  9. - but that's a check strap for stopping the boat in downhill narrow locks (although it looks as though he's broken it), not a mooring rope!
  10. Only 25?! I've seen gates in use (admittedly some years ago!) down the Cheshire locks that dated from the 1890s - they must have been around 60 years old at least!
  11. I don't recall seeing any mention of this canal restoration...... http://www.willowwrentraining.co.uk/gallery.html
  12. Both the "Alcor" and "Mercury" are converted with wooden bottoms. The "Princess Anne" (shortened) also is composite.
  13. The Denebola is the last full length unconverted Little Woolwich motor to remain composite which is why it is staying that way!
  14. Boaters I have known call this the "Cock and Bear" bridge after a nearby pub
  15. Hunton change lock and Boxmoor lock were change locks in the "Three lengths" down from the Cowroast where lock wheelers would change over. I too have only ever heard boaters refer to "Lock 80" as such. Rodneys would sometimes help through the locks in return for a sandwich or some such .
  16. Some bits of the "Fox" were recycled eg the Rams Head ended up (slightly modified) on the "Dory"
  17. The converted wooden motor "Fox" ex-Seddons was broken up by the Hillmorton Section's dredging gang while sunk on the Hillmorton side of bridge 90 (A45) at Braunston 25-30 years ago - which I witnessed. It had a Lister SR3 in it at the time.
  18. This is a copyright Phil Garrett picture I believe, and you can just glimpse the lettering on the cloths covering the load in the boat's bottom. Unusually the planks are on the wrong side!
  19. It was the practice for some people carrying certain things eg steel, to just lay the topcloths over the cargo in the boat's bottom, so a big motor might appear not clothed up whereas the little butty, having the sidecloths up anyway, would have the top cloths put on as normal
  20. The trouble is that no-one wants them, too much expense in upkeep and licensing etc and too much aggravation when out boating!
  21. It is the Hydrus/ Raven - formerly fitted with a Petter PD2, more recently with a Lister
