  1. And then there is the fellow who did it in a mirror dinghy (setting out from Ellesmere of Llangollen fame - heading for the River Severn via ditches and drains) whose travels are amusingly documented in "The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow" by A. J. Mackinnon.
  2. Richard Fairhurst moors his nb Iago there - you could PM him.
  3. Having got most of the way through this book now (I'm taking it very slowly as there's a wealth of fascinating information to digest) I'm amazed by the wealth of pictures, maps, illustrations and image material in general. How they've managed to pack so much in for the price is quite beyond me. It's certainly very good value for money indeed.
  4. You might find this is the answer Marcus. I've made use of their services on several occasions all with excellent results. For anyone with a van or large car .......... or who needs stuff shifting, this is well worth investigating. http://www.anyvan.com/
  5. And there was me thinking that this was a helpful, informative thread warning people about the possibility of further boat break ins on the Macc .............
  6. For the Horse's benefit: http://www.narrowboatworld.com/index.php/leatest/7555-rescued-from-obscurity - but don't mention it to anyone else on this forum!
  7. I see that The Dark Side have picked up on it as well. At least they know a good thing when they see it!
  8. Very perceptive man, your dad, if I may say so!
  9. I would if I could .......... but I'm feeling a wee bit hoarse!
  10. Believe me - you don't know the half of it!!
  11. Good to see Scotland and Ireland enjoying what I can only assume is a drought!
  12. This is, indeed, a good point Athy - so I got straight back to those that know about these things, and this is the response: "The only cost to the Trust is the (very competitive!) print cost. Once we cover that it's 100% to H&G CT funds. "Of the dozens of late corrections one of a few that got missed (that to my mind were important) was to add in a note that all proceeds were to H&G CT funds - annoying"! So there you have it ......... straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
  13. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  14. This is shameless plug for one of the most imaginative, innovative and generally go-ahead canal trusts in the land! The Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust (www.h-g-canal.org.uk), feeling that an updated version of their restoration saga was well overdue, have just published Rescued from Obscurity – subtitled ....... 'the continuing story of the Hereford & Gloucester Canal'. As always their timing is immaculate as this 200 page book – packed with images, old and new, in both colour and black & white – arrives just in time for Christmas and represents fantastic value for money. It can be obtained from the Herefordshire and Gloucester Canal Trust, 18 Coningsby Court, Coningsby Street, Hereford HR1 2DF – £12.00 including P&P. It can also be purchased from the Wharf House Visitor Centre at Over Basin. I would add the usual disclaimers – except that I am a (proud) life member of the trust (albeit a very inactive one) and, almost as we speak, working my way through the incredible diversity of content of this valuable addition to our waterways literature.
  15. I moved some 12 years back! Now moored on the Forth & Clyde Canal at Bowling, overlooking the Clyde estuary with views 'doon the w'ter'. There are around another 50 residential moorings available on the F&C (under Scottish Canals 'Living on Water' initiative) between here and Edinburgh - half a dozen of which are at Bowling. Contact Click-let Water 0131 555 1704; www.click-let-water.com for further details.
  16. Pedant alert Tony: The Fordson Super Major has a Simms pump fitted with a centrifugal governor! so it did run away, its just that you were quick to catch it on the stop control. As no external fuel (like an oil/diesel mixture in the sump) was involved it would stop on the control. If external fuel had been involved there is every chance it would not. Ditto but on an E Type when on a test drive. A far from pleasant experience.
  17. I was referring to the 2014 edition of Nicholson Guide 6 - Nottingham, York & the North East - in which the numbered Km posts are shown as per their position on the bank. I found them a great help when determining exactly where I was on the Trent and I imagine they could be an important feature in the event of an emergency. I believe that the mile markers on the mapping throughout all the guides are merely there as a planning aid for lock/mile calculations and the like
  18. Also Km on the Trent. Both the Fossdyke & Witham and the River Trent are shown in the latest edition of Nicholson with the Km posts marked on the mapping - which is very helpful for establishing one's location on what can be two fairly featureless waterways for anyone unfamiliar with these navigations.
  19. Charter Hotel Boat Willow - currently plying the Lowland Canals of Scotland - has a permanently enclosed front deck constructed by the owners' son. See http://www.hotelnarrowboat.com/willow.html for photos (click on the plan). Contact Nick and Irene Scott for further details.
  20. Any chance of a link to the programme - or at least the channel it was on?
  21. Here's the email address for a Sea Otter owner who lives in Braunston. If he doesn't know the answer I doubt anyone will! info@e-canalmapp.co
  22. It's well worth noting that's there's a useful manhole cover on Wheelock Wharf that's handy for a self pump out! Twilight is an excellent time to perform the task.
  23. Could I just second that - a beautiful piece of engineering. Thank you for sharing Richard.
