  1. I can't find the link but if you are trying to seat a big tyre on a bead you fill the tyre with gas, chuck a match in, big bang, voila! tyre perfectly seated and you can then inflate it. Possibly just as dangerous as Mr. Bizzards idea but you may still have a tyre at the end of the procedure (maybe no eyebrows though)

  3. The hand wheel probably comes from some sort of machine, old lathe or something, it has a boss cast into it to be drilled for a handle, as for the rest, don't really know. the proper wheel is not a difficult thing to cast if someone has one to use as a pattern.

  5. I,ve known a 1.8 seize through overheating, cooled down, refilled it, turned the water ON(!) and it was ok, luck of the draw really.
  6. I seem to remember a manufacturer, Lister? doing a bit of research into chrome plated liners and rings, not a success, the things seized, probably due to no oil film on the liners, also there was research into PTFE coatings on rings, dunno what happened to that but it seemed to be dropped after a while. In the end it seems that old fashioned cast iron works best for liners maybe with chrome plated rings. Vim? can you still get it? you could always try a handful of sand. No , Don't. Really.
  7. I wonder what Larch is like as planking timber, or even tanalised 'wood'. I think that most of the oak sold for flooring comes from France and yes, they really do have a lot of it, some of the houses along the canals have immense amounts of winter firewood.
  8. Might not be a definitive answer to that. I would hazard a guess that if you intend to do harm, or intend to steal etc. it is covered by the same sort of legislation as covers any goods, chattels or whatever property is called. However if you are just walking you own boat along and using the other boats deck or even roof it is probably perfectly ok unless you break something, solar panels etc. Thing is that you would probably have to argue each individual case in court as I doubt there is much precedence in existence. I can hear the rustle of lawyers circling.......
  9. Don't use old engine oil, too acidic.
  10. Also I am fairly certain that the CV joints are VW parts.
  11. I seem to get far more good service than bad these days, a few years ago there was a myth that the british were afraid to complain and since then some of us have become professional complainers and moaners and impossible to please, I don't mean on this forum, just conversations in the pub and letters pages in the local rag.
  12. All quite possible, you could also, for example, live in a your smaller house in winter, live on your smaller, cheap boat in summer, We find that keeping the boat across the channel is cheaper, even allowing for the cost of travel, its called having your cake and eating it, it takes a really close eye on a tight budget and a lot of organising but if, for another example, you have a dog then holidays are not a problem, get it a passport, chuck it in the car, tell it that snails are really very nice and off you go.

  15. I keep meaning to research this. The inclined plane at Coalport leads down to a short section of canal, now in water, the middle bit is under car parks and houses and the dry channel runs for a couple of hundred yards past this. The Brewery Inn is on the bank of the dry bit and at the back of the building clearly shows where barrels would have been loaded onto boats, next time I`m passing I'll take a pic and try to post it. I always assumed that there was no return loads going back up the inclined plane but perhaps there was.

    The Beast of Turin

Good grief, look at the tyres, too skinny for a moped, and hand start, and all driven by a bit of chain, what could possibly go wrong? Mind you wouldn't you just love to burn off some prat in a Corsa at the lights?

    Hot foot

You really don't need a feckin` great battery to lug about, solar panels are the thing ..... but I s`pose if the sun is shining you won't need electric socks....
  18. Unless things have changed a magistrates court can only impose sentences of up to 6 months, if the bench thinks that a longer term may be appropriate you are bailed to appear at Crown court.
  19. It really has to be a small solid fuel stove, they take up little space, are safe when sat on a slab and not close to the surroundings, cheap and in the summer you can plonk a vase of flowers on the top. just be sure to leave a good space around the chimney and also where it goes through the ceiling. Cost? just add about 30 % onto the price for chimney, collar, etc.
  20. What you will probably have is just a thin coat of some sort of primer. It will probably not be truly waterproof so whatever you do you need to get started on painting it. I made it the first job I did when I did my last boat. Personally I would sand what you have, apply u /coat and then a couple of top coats, its always worked for me. You can decide on the final stuff, two or three colours, stripes etc later.

  23. Buying a new boat and fitting it out will take a year or two or more, your 'significant change of circumstances' might be fed up with the whole thing by then, stretching your existing boat could be a good deal quicker and cost less.
