Up here in the weirder parts of Shropshire theres plenty of folk who don't believe in climate change, mind you theres plenty who don't believe in evolution either so enlightentment may be a long while in coming.
  2. I drain my engine every year and the stuff in it is really horrible, yes I use antifreeze and there is an anode in it but it always comes out looking orange and nasty, dunno why, maybe 'cos there is copper pipe in the system and electrolysis is eating my engine.

  7. Management has been crap ever since it was decided it was a thing in itself, rather than expertise in the thing you were managing. Nicely put, applies to every organisation from the government all the way down to, Ooh, I dunno, whoever failed to order the pork scratchings in the pub, my dog was a very dissatisfied customer the other night,

  9. `Recorded on computer` Impounded and sold`` Licences withheld` Lovely. Do as Mr. Bluck says or he will make life very difficult for you on his canal. What an ass.

  11. Now, about Hotchkiss cones, nothing to argue about there surely .....
  12. Propellers are aerofoils. Modern planes have 'winglets' on the wing tips to stop the low pressure air rolling off the tips, if I had a steel propeller I'd be interested in welding winglets to the tips to do the same. Should I patent this right away or just have another bit of toast and forget about it?

  15. You have been unlucky and your seller was dishonourable. It happens to all of us at sometime or other. Everything is fixable but maybe it will take a while. It would all look better in the summer. Don't worry about CRT, any trouble and just tell them what has happened. Breakdowns happen and having a working engine cannot be guaranteed for anyone, things fail. What engine and what is it not doing? Where are you? Can you get water and charge batteries?
  16. Its the double diagonal that makes life difficult, two layers of planks laid at 90 degrees to each other, it means a bit of rot can mean a lot of planks removed to get at the problem.
  17. Wouldn't worry about the timing and things, if it starts ok and runs ok and doesn't use water / oil a bit of smoke is fine. There is also a chance that it takes a while to get to temperature, I'd put the spanners away until it really needs it.
  18. Years ago we found a little lost terrier type dog, followed us for miles and eventually we took it into our rented holiday cottage, Kids loved it and named it 'Thunderwing Doomslayer', the holiday cottage owner phoned around and eventually Thunderwings owner arrived to collect him. Little creature was actually called Angel. In the meantime my dog says well done for being kind and suggests kicking the cats out and giving a home to Carson.
  19. If you dig out the riverbed the surface will still be the same height unless you deepen it all the way to the sea and then lower the sea level.

  21. Try airbnb, quite interesting prices for rooms in peoples places. That's what we will be using when we go to festivals etc and gigs with musician son next year, fed up with travelling hundreds of miles just to get home at 3.00 am . Oh, another thought, hostels? theres a good one at Coalport and there must be lots more nearer to the S. Midlands.
  22. So many flippin' boats about now that as soon as you get up a bit of speed you have to ease off. Its like driving a bus, get the thing rolling along nicely and someone wants to get on or off the thing ....... Exits grumbling to talk to the dog.

  24. Boats move, can't do much about that. Tied with a spring helps tremendously, you are affectively triangulating the thing but on a shallow bit of bank the water is pulled out from under the boat, boat sits on bottom and tips, owner opens door / window and yells at passing boat. Solution? Just be aware and live with it, the edges are shallow and you can't do much about it.
  25. Its a very odd and conservative world this one with plenty of misconceptions attached to it. A boat is, as you say, just a steel structure, the bit we worry about, below the water, is likely to be much the same no matter who built it, with the proviso that it has a good shape, reasonable thickness and was welded by someone better than me. That is not really difficult to achieve although there are some truly awful boats around. The bit above water is where the expensive stuff happens, proper shapes made by people who really do understand boats and have an experienced eye for boatbuilding and not just fabrication. This is where pride of ownership and kudos comes into play and where costs rise. A Liverpool boat or similar will give good service and you will get good fun out of it but adding gold plated taps and extras all over the place will not make it a Rolls Royce, its still an Astra. A boat by a proper boatbuilder will always be a Rolls Royce even if it gets a bit tired. Do you want a boat you can take immense pride in or just a good serviceable boat? Others will disagree with some / all of this. edit, Square edged gunnels are much better and safer.
