  1. That makes no sense. What you mean is : Meekly allow an organisation to push the boundary of their powers without challenge. Glenn
  2. With comments like this, (and plenty others you've made) you risk becoming the preverbiable. If the guidance is 'not that bad' there'd be no need for this discussion. All anyone wants is clear interpretation of the guidelines. Personally, I prefer an interpretation of guidlines that benefits boaters and a boating community. An interpretation that allows boaters to act lawfully and fairly. I don't want an interpretation, by C&RT, that is unlawful and an abuse of power for some other gain. As for talks: C&RT may well put on a lovely lunch with plenty of butter, but by the time invites are sent out for such an event they'll have decided their agenda. Glenn
  3. I can't speak for others, but I'm sure there are people like myself who like to read articles written from different and varied sources. So, who, in your opinion, writes a good article? Glenn
  4. Just to be clear. I personally am not advising anyone. I found the article to be of interest because it informed me why the k&a has refused the proposal of the roaming permit. Glenn
  5. Sorry to hear that's happening. Are you saying he sought out, and followed direct advice from 'the k&a group'? Glenn.
  6. I am offering up an alternative view for others to read, if they haven't already. Glenn
  7. ....but a permit that's unlawful? An article on the Kennet and Avon Boating Community Website titled "Why Roving Mooring Permits are unlawful" begins: "Boaters without home moorings on the southern Grand Union Canal are being offered Roving Mooring Permits by CRT. Boaters are being offered a way out of the enforcement process that means paying a substantial extra fee (£800 per year for a 60 foot boat) to do what s.17(3)©(ii) of the British Waterways Act 1995 already permits them to do." It can be found at; http://kanda.boatingcommunity.org.uk/why-roving-mooring-permits-are-unlawful/
  8. I reckon this can be applied to the state of canals in general. There are many locks kept like show pieces, whilst others are being left to rot or collapse.
  9. And Hopefully, no budgies have suffered in the making of this thread.
  10. I rarely look in a mirror. And it does frighten me when I do. Hence, I rarely look in a mirror. Other people have to look at me , don't see why I should too. No.. Not in budgie smuggling pants.
  11. I've just flogged my bike Very sad about it. Give it some, enjoy
  12. Agreed, them wide locks chuck my 48' boat about unless done carefully. But any help with a swing bridge is a god send. No one can mess that up. Or can they?

  14. Jokingly, I trapped a few the other day on a bridge by opening the bottom lock gates either side of them. " get out of that " I said, " but not till I've left the lock please." " then you can shut them for me" Also be very careful nudging gates open when you can't see the beam! I haven't caught anyone yet.
  15. Recently, I've found that watchers have become more problematic and dangerous than any help offered. I've always time to chat, and explain if I can, don't mind that. But sometimes the volume of watchers is too much, they get in the way. Especially the little children I walk into. They're just the correct height to trip over or knee into. Otherwise, when I know the locks, it's usually open those paddles fast and furious. Keep moving. When helping others: I try to remember to ask before opening paddles. It's their boat not mine.
  16. Lovely photos, Dean, thanks. Yea, the North is wonderful and beautiful. I've just travelled the peak forest, really lovely. The Macclesfield Canal is great. ( hopefully the north is safe! the southerners are too busy fussing with roaming permits in order to remain in the south.)
  17. I was going to suggested smoking, it tends to work. But now I feel guilty that passive smoking could be harming their health. My other method: I light a lamp in the evening, in me cratch, luring the little things out of the cabin. Talking gently too them. ...then I smash 'em with a cricket bat.
  18. Cheers, Very quick replies, I think I'll be going down them, ?, haven't looked at map. To get on the bridgewater. Thought it were worth asking. Most of the ''ooooh, tricky, you need to be with someone' comments usually turns out to be an exaggeration. I got told last week the bosley locks were a pain. I enjoyed them. Sun shining and in no hurry. Slightly irritating that there are no ledges to walk across the top gates to open the opposite paddles. But I either waited for the boat to rise enough to step on and across the roof (too idle ro walk around). Or I just worked one side.
  19. Are the rochdale 9 as awkward as I've heard? I hear the gates are a pig to open because there are no side wiers. Heading there next week, single handed, so advice welcome, particularly from any single handers. Glenn
  20. Ok your on. Hopefully this transport gathering will give them a good kick start. See you soon Glenn
  21. He is suspected to have been active on the k&a, wiltshire, earlier in the year.
  22. Splendid news! I shall be travelling through again towards the end of the month, so lovely news. Glenn Splendid news! I shall be travelling through again towards the end of the month, so lovely news. Glenn
  23. ...over my head too. I guess it's like what they call a pramhood without the sides. Wouldn't suit your boat. Glenn
